The History of the Suez Canal by Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805 - 1894). Translated by Henry Drummond-Wolff (1830 - 1908)

This project is now complete. All files can be found on the catalog page:
http://librivox.org/history-suez-canal-by-ferdinand-de-lesseps/

A lively picture of the origin and completion of the Suez Canal (built between 1859 and 1869) and his architect, Vicomte de Lesseps. This is the translation of a lecture given before the Societe de Gens Lettres in Paris, in April 1870 by de Lesseps himself. ( Availle)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/historysuezcana01lessgoog
    for page 15 see here:https://archive.org/details/historysuezcana00lessgoog
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I still have to edit the final two sections of my color project, but after that we're ready to go! :D

I have uploaded the preface.

As for that table, I made the executive decision to forgo the "thousandth" and simply read it as bignumber POINT smallnumber. I declare that as OK

And here is the middle section of this project. Not quite as long as I thought it might be - I guess I'm reading faster and faster the longer I'm on here?

All done and PL OK
An interesting book - one does wonder exactly how people decided the oceans were at different levels- different tides yes but different levels ? . I'd not realised that the canal itself opened up the desert for humans, nowadays they would have to get an enviromental impact study - all those people probably wiped out a few sub species :D

I found his account very interesting too. Imagine he could just waltz up to the viceroy and get stuff done... I mean, there's probably more to that, but it must have been significantly easier then than it would be today.

I'm sure things would be run differently than today. I'm not sure whether this whole environmentalism and technological caution is a good thing everywhere and all the time...

Anyway, thanks for listening! Will get this into the catalog a bit later tonight.
Cheers, Ava.
