The Life of Captain James Cook, The Circumnavigator by Arthur Kitson (1860 - 1937).

This project is now complete. All files can be found on the catalog page:
http://librivox.org/the-life-of-captain-james-cook-by-arthur-octavius-kitson/

“In publishing a popular edition of my work, Captain James Cook, R.N., F.R.S., it has, of course, been necessary to condense it, but care has been taken to omit nothing of importance, and at the same time a few slight errors have been corrected, and some new information has been added, chiefly relating to the disposition of documents.” ( Arthur Kitson)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10842
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

HI Naomi, this looks interesting!
James Cook was cool, I read a biography of his years ago!

Back in a moment with the MW...

Edit: MW is up and running. I am still investigating the author who seems to have been another Arthur Kitson than the one gutenberg (and wikipedia) lists as author, but since the name is the same, you're good to record in any case.
I have changed the filename slightly, please use this one when you upload.

Other than that: Have fun! :D
Cheers, Ava.

I'll park the following here for posterity:

Okay, here's an entry for Mr. Kitson that states his two books (essentially this one in two different lengths):
http://classify.oclc.org/classify2/ClassifyDemo?search-author-txt=%22Kitson%2C+Arthur%2C+1848-1915%22

And then we have a bit of juicy history; no mention about him trying himself as a writer though:

Goodness me - what a story. That poor woman. A bit difficult to even read between the lines on this. There doesn't seem to have been any lasting rancour between husband and wife as Arthur dedicated his book to her in 1907/12. But the article seems to imply that they either separated or divorced as Kitson remarried in 1912.

There seems to have been 20 editions of this book judging by the classify article you attached. The preface of the version I have attached seems to be a second edition as he makes reference to his 1907 work and ends preface 1912.

Preface uploaded. 1.25minutes

https://librivox.org/uploads/availle/lifeofcaptaincook_00_kitson_128kb.mp3

This should get us started. I haven't said 'preface' at the end of spiel about librivox (where you have instructed me to say 'chapter #' as I say it again 5 words later. Let me know if you would prefer that I repeat 'preface'. Thank you.

00:00 "Preface" should precede the book title at the opening. Yes, repeating it 5s apart at the end of the file seems unnecessary.

No!

We need the _00_ two digit numbers in all the files so they sort correctly on an mp3 player later. Please reupload the same file with _00_ (and the future ones with 01, 02, 03....)

Thanks!
Cheers, Ava.

Sorry if my comment wasn't clear but I was referring to the start of the recording. To make it easier for visually impaired listeners to find a chapter the chapter # (or in this the word preface) is at the very beginning of the file (before the book title). The first words of each file should be "Chapter #" followed by the book title. See below.

START of recording (Intro):
◦"Chapter [number] of The Life of Captain James Cook, The Circumnavigator. This is a LibriVox recording.......

Lol - this is a bad start! I am sure we'll know each other very well by the end of this book. Here it is again - I said 'the preface of...'. and reinstated the file number of '00'.
