I take a different approach. I find some silence in the recording, maybe a bit at the end, maybe a pause in the beginning, and copy that. I then past it to the end of the file (multiple times, if needed to create 5 seconds). That way the "silence" includes ambient room noise. Machine generated silence is absolutely silent, which can be noticeable after the listener has heard room silence in all the other pauses.

This is what I do as well. I used to do the generated silence until this was pointed out to me, and after having heard the effects in my proof listening. That dead silence is quite a jar sometimes, depending on the amount of ambient noise in the recording.
