The Chemistry, Properties and Tests of Precious Stones by John Mastin (1865 - 1932).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-chemistry-properties-and-tests-of-precious-stones-by-john-mastin/
to follow ( Kevin Green)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/23626
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    • Say:
"The Chemistry, Properties and Tests of Precious Stones, by John Mastin. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Chemistry, Properties and Tests of Precious Stones by John Mastin. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.
  • Example filename chemistryofpreciousstones_##_mastin.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. chemistryofpreciousstones_01_mastin.mp3)

Thanks David.
Any chance we can cut the MP3 file name a bit?

Kevin,

Definitely, I already reduced it to chemistryofpreciousstones_01_mastin.mp3 but you and slice it further as you know the subject better, maybe just preciousstones_01_mastin.mp3 instead.

I also removed the section on ID tags.

Sounds good, I think I'll go with the shorter one!

PS, I take it you do still want ID tags?

Kevin,

You can if you want to, but they are not required with our current software. The system will pull the title for each file from the Title column in the section compiler, the album and author information are pulled from the database values I just entered based on the information provided in you project launch template.

If you use the checker program to test your files you tell it not to check for ID tags by clicking on Validation in the top bar then clicking Choose Validation Methods and unchecking the box in front of ID3 Metadata.

Thanks both. Should be quite an interesting read if you like precious stones. :)

I've just got a new audio set-up, so I'll be using this recording as a test for it. I'd be grateful if you could comment on sound quality, background noise etc, as I'm still tweaking the various knobs to get a good recording.

thanks

Will do, Kevin.

You should edit your first post and remove the ~ symbol before the book title. It makes it look like you still need a dpl.

Preface uploaded

time 1:22

I would get rid of the ~ if I could find out where to do it!

Anyhow, here's chapter 1

Please let me know if you have any problems with recording quality/volume or suchlike as I'm still tweaking the equipment

thanks
