Smoke by Ivan Turgenev (1818 - 1883). Translated by Constance Garnett (1861 - 1946)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/smoke-by-ivan-turgenev/

Smoke is an 1867 novel by the highly acclaimed Russian writer Ivan Turgenev (1818–1883) that tells the gripping story of a secret love affair between a young betrothed Russian man and a young married Russian woman, while also delivering in the opening chapters the author's criticism of Russia and Russians of the period. The story takes place largely in the German resort town of Baden-Baden. -- Adapted from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_(novel)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/40813
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

It appears that this novel is pretty much salted with French phrases. I have 0 background in that beautiful sounding language and will be relying on Google Translate, which gives some idea of how it's supposed to sound. If you have an ear for French and hear me go way off the tracks, please, if you don't mind, point out or even send me an MP3 of how it should sound. And (I can't resist saying) Pardon my French!

You are talking to the wrong person on proper French pronunciation! I absolutely butcher it! (I do, and I feel really bad about it!) There is the thread in the Help Wanted forum asking for French pronunciation help that I have used a lot. Our French speakers are wonderful and very helpful!
