edit me

I have recorded the preface and first chapter. I intend to try to read 2-3 chapters a week, but estimated my completion date beyond that in case of unforseen circumstances.

Preface and Ch 1 are here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?3nomjcdwh0z

I did have one question in reading the text. In the preface the word [Page] appears and I am not sure whether or not this should be read aloud. I am reading from the Gutenberg text.

I am having to record this on my Mac with GarageBand and an internal mic, so I would love for someone to let me know if the sound quality gets worse or changes radically over the course of the book. I will try to pick quiet nights when the cat isn't snoring!

Okey-doke!

I'd ignore the [Page] business.

We'll try to find you a dedicated proof-listener who'll listen to your files as you upload them, and give you fast feedback about errors or changes in sound quality.

I believe your files will stay safely on mediafire until you're all done -- but just in case they disappear, please keep copies on your own computer as well :)

If any file needs to be edited, please add "FIXED" to the filename, upload the edited version, and replace the link in the Magic Window so that I pick the right files when I catalog the finished book.

And here's how to edit your Magic Window!
Click the little "edit me" link under the left corner and log in with the info I'm about to send you via PM.

Here is a page of instructions:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dt724vw_3gtjj3b
but don't be alarmed, all you have to read is:
Marking sections 'Complete'
Adding links for proof-listeners
Adding editing information

Let me know if you hit any snags.

Oh, and if Real Life gets in the way and you have to take a break from recording (it happens to all of us) just pop in here every few weeks and make a post so I know you're still interested in reading. If a couple of months pass with no word from you, I'll move this thread out of the way, but we can always get it back again :)

Happy reading!

I have finished recording chapter two. I'm listening now to check for glitches, then will upload it and edit the window shortly.

ETA: I'm uploading now. I've done something that lowered the volume of chapter 2 significantly from where it was while I was recording it -- not sure what happened. If it is too quiet I will need help to fix it. And I'll watch out in the next chapter so that I avoid doing it to chapter 3.

Chapter 3 has been uploaded and added. I'm done reading for the night!

I just noticed that chapters 2 and 3 had a weird default GarageBand ID-3 tag under composer. I've changed that preference for future chapters, but would you like me to re-upload the files with those tags deleted?

No, don't worry about it -- I'll look over the tags before cataloging and tidy them up :) You're off to a flying start!

So, how can I make the volume louder in Chapter 2? I can't figure out a way in Garage Band or in iTunes. Do I need to re-record it?

Edited -- I reimported the track into Garage Band, raised all the volume sliders (except the mic one, which I figured would make no difference until I have to re-record), made it into a new mp3, raised the volume slider in the appropriate info tab for the iTunes file, and have uploaded this somewhat louder version. If it's not loud enough I'll need help (or to re-record it) because I'm stumped beyond this. I named it ofgirl_02fixed_alcott.mp, but it might not actually be "fixed." Grrr.
