This project is now complete. All files can be downloaded from our catalog: http://librivox.org/the-pickwick-papers-by-charles-dickens/

The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens.
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: October 31, 2007 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?
    Gutenberg e-text: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/580
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!

    (BC admin link)
  6. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "[Chapter] of The Pickwick Papers. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"The Pickwick Papers, by Charles Dickens. [Chapter]"
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Chapter]"
      If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Pickwick Papers, by Charles Dickens."
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording:
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
pickwickpapers_##_dickens.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is your section number. (pickwickpapers_01_dickens.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/WhatIsID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: ## - [Section title]
    Artist: Charles Dickens
    Album: The Pickwick Papers

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
    • If you have your own server space, post the link here. Please leave the file in this location until the project is catalogued.
    • If you don't have your own server space, you'll need to transfer the file to one of the free servers available. For a list of options, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
    • Also, Gesine has kindly offered us the use of her server for this project. The uploader can be found at http://librivox.gesine.org
      PW: upl0ad1t
I'll need the following information from you when you submit a recording:
    • your name/pseudonym as you want to appear in the LibriVox catalog, and your website URL if you like. These are only necessary if this is your first LibriVox recording.
    • the file size of your .mp3 file.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me. :)

I'd like to claim the first section, if I may.

I love this book and I don't know why nobody (to my knowledge) has ever made a movie of it. Most of the Dickens humor is in the narrative so it is lost when they make a movie of it. This one, the humor is in the circumstances, so it would be funny as a film, IMHO.

Anyway, I'll start reading and get it back to you ASAP.

Thanks,
DebraLynn

I agree completely! This was the first Dickens book I read and enjoyed (I think I was about 13...), and I've always wanted to put it on LibriVox since I joined. :) I'll sign you up.

I am currently uploading Chapter 1 and will post the link when it completes. Meanwhile, I'd like to sign up for Chapter 3, if that is okay.

03 A new Acquaintance--The Stroller's Tale--A disagreeable Interruption, and an unpleasant Encounter

Thanks,
DebraLynn

May I also proof/listen edit for you on this? My second favorite hobby after classics just happens to be Victorian novels.

Hi,

Chapter 3 is uploading and I will post the link when it completes. I would love to read chapter 2, if you don't mind me reading consecutive chapters. Otherwise, please assign me whichever chapter you want.

Thanks,

Hi DebraLynn,

Here is a link to the IMDB page referring to the very good 1952 film of Pickwick Papers.
I enjoy this film very much, but I am sure a modern version could better it. James Hayter is excellent as Pickwick, though.

Thanks, Chrisczech. As a Dickens loving movie buff who "IMDBs" all the time, I'm ashamed it never occurred to me to look there for this. I don't suppose it is available on DVD? I wish they'd remake something like that rather than most of the crap they come up with these days.

Also, here is my recording of chapter 3:

Playusa didn't have it, nor cdwowusa.

No problem, DebraLynn! Hehe, you are well on your way to reading the whole book by yourself...

If you like Dickens, by the way, I just started two other collaborative projets of "Persuasion" by Jane Austen and "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Those might be the kind of things you're interested in. Gesine also has one going of "Portrait of a Lady," by Henry James, another fabulous Victorian-era author.

I love Dickens, and Jane Austen is probably my all-time fave! I don't know why I had the impression that all the Austen novels were pretty much "spoken for." I will check that out. I'm also a big Thomas Hardy fan and am doing some chapters of Jude the Obscure.

I'm surprised you're not getting more volunteers for PP, but I guess I'll keep plugging away at it until that happens 'cause I want to hear it. I've read all of Dickens's novels but when I read aloud for a recording, I really read in a different way than I do otherwise and I think I sometimes get more out of it.

Anyway, I'll get to work on Chapter 2.

Thanks,
Debra Lynn

:?:

I was uncertain how to read the following text from Chapter 2, with the starred note attached:
'You were present at that glorious scene, sir?' said Mr. Snodgrass.

'Present! think I was;* fired a musket--fired with an idea--
rushed into wine shop--wrote it down--back again--whiz, bang
--another idea--wine shop again--pen and ink--back again--
cut and slash--noble time, Sir. Sportsman, sir ?'abruptly turning
to Mr. Winkle.
[* A remarkable instance of the prophetic force of Mr.
Jingle's imagination; this dialogue occurring in the year
1827, and the Revolution in 1830.
I tried several methods. I have uploaded a short (38 second) clip with the method I finally settled on, which you can find at this link:

http://download.yousendit.com/FCED23353A0BCAD4

Please let me know if this is okay or if there is a better way of handling it.

Thanks,
DebraLynn

It sounds quite good to me. :)

I should probably take this opportunity to say that I'm really, really enjoying your reading. You were made to read Dickens.
