The Gadfly by Ethel Lilian Voynich (1864 - 1960).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-gadfly-by-ethel-lilian-voynich/
An adventure thriller set in 1840s Italy under the dominance of Austria, a time of revolt and uprisings. The story of faith, disillusionment, revolution, romance, and heroism centres on the life of the protagonist, Arthur Burton, member of the Youth movement; his antagonist, Padre Montanelli; and his love Gemma. ( Wikipedia and Mark Chulsky)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3431
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.

I can MC this for you.

MW is set up and tested. Please adjust the first section title as necessary.

You can remove the section on ID tags if you don't want to check them as DPL. The catalog software can fill those in.

Moving this to Readers Wanted: Books since you have a DPL.

Samra / Mark,

I have added Samra generically for the moment so that Mark can assign the reading section.

Samra, here is what your reader catalog page looks like at the moment >> https://librivox.org/reader/11104

We can change your Catalog display name to something else, as an example my forum name and catalog display name are different >> https://librivox.org/reader/6065

We can also add a personal website if you wish.

Hi, Mark!

I am sorry about this. But I want to double check that I claimed chapter two in The Gadfly. :help: I remember that you replied to my first post. Have I been dropped from the project? I am so sorry that I am taking a long time to upload the chapter. But I will record and upload it as soon as possible. Can I reclaim chapter two? :hmm:

Thanks
Thanks, SaraHale. :D

Sara, the section has been yours, there was a database crash, that's why it was dropped. Thank you!

SaraHale wrote:... give me a constructive feedback on section 2.
Hello, Sara,
I'm glad you wish to record more of this book, you would like it; I was reading it as a teenager many years ago, and couldn't stop.
Here is my constructive feedback, please see it as encouragement, not criticism. All these little things would be a "PL OK" if you wouldn't ask :-)
My general advice is: do not rush, and look up unfamiliar words in a dictionary.
Arthur and Montanelli are Italians, but the plot is set in Switzerland, so if they use unfamiliar words, you would suspect that's
Italian, if there are names or places, that should be French. Please try to pronounce them as a native would: go to the Google Translate tool (https://translate.google.com/), there is a "speaker" icon, so you can listen to the right sounding. Wikipedia has transcriptions and sound files for many names.
Here we go:
0:19 Voynich rhymes with "which", not "nick"
0:43 "tyrannical" mispronounced
1:10 Papist mispronounced
3:10, 6:02, 9:22, 17:15, 18:57, 21:52 "carino" rhymes with "Latino", it means "darling" in Italian, it looks like will be repeated often through the book :-)
3:30 Protestant mispronounced
7:52 Straightway, not "away"
10:39 and 17:32 excursions (I hear exertions)
15:24 plunged (I hear plugged)
16:17 picturesque mispronounced
17:17 there are asterisks indicating a subject change; the pause should be longer, up to 1.5 - 2 sec.
18:20 "and he still repeated" missing "he"
18:32 "between himself and Arthur", I hear "between him and Arthur"

Again, these are nitpicks, don't worry too much about them. I could give it a "PL OK" if you are not up to fixing them, if you keep these notes in mind for future recordings, that would be good though :-)
Keep up good reading, I think you are doing great.
