Well done for getting back to it!

PL for Section 86:

16:34 Repeat of “on this” in “on this subject of the want of Christian spirit” p475 1st column about halfway.
19:06 a ping at the start of the first paragraph, page 475 Col 2: “The dwelling places…”
The silence at the end seems to be a little longer than 6 seconds. I don't know if that matters at all.

(While you're editing these, you can decide about:
12:21 "Wictoria" p474 Col 2, start of line 10. You say "Victoria";
20:10 “circumstances” said for “circumstance”, page 475 Col 2, end line 20.)

Thanks, Gill:

12:21 "Wictoria" p474 Col 2, start of line 10. You say "Victoria"; [edited]
16:34 Repeat of “on this” in “on this subject of the want of Christian spirit” p475 1st column about halfway. [deleted]
19:06 a ping at the start of the first paragraph, page 475 Col 2: “The dwelling places…” [I'm not sure that I've dealt with this, but I've deamplified the "silence".]
20:10 “circumstances” said for “circumstance”, page 475 Col 2, end line 20.) [edited]

The silence at the end seems to be a little longer than 6 seconds. I don't know if that matters at all. [cut down to five seconds]

Hi Peter & Gill

The following book review appeared in Saturday's Guardian newspaper:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2021/jun/12/let-me-take-you-by-the-hand-by-jennifer-kavanagh-review-true-tales-from-londons-streets

Which might be of interest to you given the work that you have both done on Mayhew's London Labour series of books.

Cheers

Steve

PS - Please don't blame me if this causes you further distraction! :)

Thanks, Steve; I'll probably not buy a copy, though. The "consent forms" and demand for addresses, and the reputedly stodgy style puts me off a little.

it's true that there are people still in a similar state in London now as in Mayhew's time. A few years back, three friends and I decided to got to the Brick Lane area (near Whitechapel), because we'd heard about the Indian restaurants there. Wandering the back streets, there were people sitting on the pavement, trying to sell rusty tools and old bottles .... poverty still with its claws in their lives.

Section 87 PL OK!

(There's only one little change which slightly alters the meaning if you really want to edit it:
P478 Col 1 at 17:12 “and with some skill” said for “and some with skill”.)

So close to the end now!

Thanks, Gill. Section 87 edited and uploaded.

Unfortunately, most of the last chapter is a tabulation of his data, but I think we should do it, to fit in with the rest of the text.

Section 88 uploaded: Of Children sent out ... pdf 532-538 / text 479-485
(40.49)

Total so far, approx. 52:43:03

Last section: Of the Capital and income PDF 538 / text 485 to END

I see that Audible already has a copy of volume one of London Labour, so I've given up on checking all my files ready for publishing on Audible. No financial profit from this one, I'm afraid.

The final section, section 89, has been uploaded.

From: Of the Capital and income PDF 538 / text 485 to END!

Total recording time of approximately 53 hrs, 22 mins.

Annise, I've been modifying the summary occasionally; it's in its final form now.

Gill's not been on the forum for some weeks now. Have you heard from her? I'm in no hurry; we could wait a few more weeks before asking someone else to PL the last two sections.

I haven't heard from her and she's been excellent with a difficult read - why don't you drop her a PM and see how things are going for her ?
