Prehistoric Men by Robert J. Braidwood (1907 - 2003).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/prehistoric-men-by-robert-j-braidwood/

NOTE THAT THE AUTHOR DIED IN 2003. Readers who live outside the US may find that this is not in the Public Domain for you.
This little book, first published in 1948, is part of the Chicago Natural History Popular History series that explains interesting subjects in ways and terms we all can understand. It was published at a time in Anthropology when exciting things like carbon dating were first being used and refined. "Prehistory means the time before written history began. Actually, more than 99 per cent of man’s story is prehistory. Man is at least half a million years old, but he did not begin to write history (or to write anything) until about 5,000 years ago. The men who lived in prehistoric times left us no history books, but they did unintentionally leave a record of their presence and their way of life. This record is studied and interpreted by different kinds of scientists." ( the author and phil chenevert)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/52664
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

NOTE: Do not try to read the charts or the titles of illustrations. You may add footnotes if you wish but they are optional; just say "footnote" and read it. then "end of footnote"
    6. BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

      Set your recording software to:
      Channels: 1 (Mono)
      Bit Rate: 128 kbps
      Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
    7. DURING recording:
No more than 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
      START of recording (Intro)
      • "Chapter [number] of Prehistoric Men. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
      • If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
      • Say:
"Prehistoric Men, by Robert J. Braidwood. [Chapter Name]"

      END of recording
      • At the end of the section, say:
        "End of [Chapter name]"
      • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
      • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Prehistoric Men, by Robert J. Braidwood. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
    8. AFTER recording
      Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
      Save files as
      128 kbps MP3
      prehistoricmen_##_braidwood_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. prehistoricmen_01_braidwood.mp3)

Please ignore ID3 tags - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
      • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
        Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
      • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: philchenevert
      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
      • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Phil,

I would like to claim Section 1 'How We Learn about Prehistoric Men'. I am recording for the first time and I would like to use my initials 'S K' as the Librivox name.

A few questions -

I see from the text that there are two sections 'Preface' and 'Preface to 3rd edition' before Section 1 'How We Learn about Prehistoric Men'. Are those sections to be read as well while I read Section 1?

There are charts and figures within the sections (like the 'Radiocarbon Chart'). I assume the reader need not make references to them while reading

There are footnotes in the text. I assume they are to be read along with the text with announcements like 'Footnote' and 'End of footnote' at appropriate places.

Thanks,

Sanjay

Hi Sanjay and a big welcome to LibriVox! :D I have assigned that section to you but before you record it, please make and upload a 1 minute test to be sure your recording set up is OK. Instructions can be found in our Wiki and in the first post of this project but Here is a video that may help too: How to Make your 1 minute test.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlaRY_-bcfs and then How to Upload your 1 minute test How to Upload your 1 minute test

(You may post the link to your test in this forum and I will see it much more quickly)

I also recommend Getting To Know our Forums Getting To Know Our Forums

We just want to check out your technical specs. Don't forget to post the link either in this thread or in Listeners WAnted forum. And how would you like to be credited in our catalog? What name? most of us use our real name but it is up to you.

Ask lots of questions. Now about the first section, (after you get the OK on your 1 minute test),
1. Do not read the prefaces, start with the first chapter.
2. Do not attempt to read the chart.
3. Footnotes are optional to the reader which means you can read them or not. I personally like the footnote about carbon dating and would read it myself saying "footnote:" then just read it but it is up to you.
4. I will set your LibriVox catalog name as SK with no periods, is this right?

Have fun! and welcome again.

Well Sanjay you do have a very nice voice for recording! Your test sample checked out fine in all aspects except for volume or loudness where it is a bit low at 81.8 dB. We aim at 89 dB with a spread of 86 - 92 being acceptable. Would you please increase the volume at least 5 decibles and upload again. It is usually better to get more volume going in by getting a bit closer to the microphone or if you are using Audacity there is a slider to increase volume of the mic instead of just amplifying the whole track which also increases noise.

Please kick up the volume a bit and submit another sample (call it sanjay672 or something like that) and post it here. You will be recording very soon I promise!. Remember to ask questions if anything seems stange or bewildering.

Phil,

Thank you for your feedback.

My mic was set to max when I recorded the piece. So I tried amplifying the whole track. Please see whether the sample at https://librivox.org/uploads/philchenevert/test_sanjay672.mp3 meets the standards.

I will also try to speak a bit louder in my future recordings.

Thanks!

That is fine and you have the official OK to record lots and lots for LibriVox! Did you post this in the Listener's Wanted forum? If so I will mark it OK there. Have fun!

Thank you, Phil. Yes - I just posted my test recording in Listeners Waned forum.

In the eagerness that is to be expected of a newbie, I have already recorded Section 1 of the book. I will upload it shortly.

Could you please assign Sections 2 and 3 to me? I plan to get it done over the weekend.

Regards,

Sanjay

WE LOVE enthusiasm here. sections 2 and 3 are all yours. :D
EDIT: I will put this into the magic window for proof listening. Unfortunately no one has volunteered to be our DPL yet so it may take longer than usual. But be patient!
