Could you check that THE BET - a short story by Anton Chekhov (it's a translation?) is out of copyright? He died in 1904 so it should be OK.

many thanks

Re. The Bet. I did this in the last collection so it must be PD. This is the link I used.

Thank you, Peter, and congratulations on your first recording  I have added you to the catalog and if you click on your name in the Magic Window, you will be taken to your personal catalog page.

Please be sure to check back to see if Kathrine (our proof listener) has any editing suggestions for you. If she does, I'd like to ask you to also correct the file name as we need it standardized. It needs to be: shortstory065_bet_pt_128kb.mp3
If you have no edits, don't re-upload just for that: I can do it when I catalog the project.
Also, did you read the version suggested by Tony, above? (thank you, Tony, for stepping in there).
Copyright is very complicated... it depends on where you (the reader or the listener) are at the time. In general, works have to be Public Domain (PD) in the U.S., which generally means published before 1923 with some exceptions (science fiction and government publications come to mind). When the author died in 1904, you're usually safe... unless the translation was published after 1923.
Other countries, such as Australia, European countries and I believe Asia have different rules, based on the death date of the author and/or translator - so you will find a number of works PD in the US (so available on Librivox) but not PD in other countries as the author died in, say, 1950. The best thing to do is look up the rules for the country where you are. Librivox doesn't police this - but we have been told that in some countries (Germany was given as the example) you may be imprisoned without warning for infringement of copyright laws

I never realised that all of this would be so complicated!

Yes, it is complicated... and as we are all volunteers, we have no "legal department" so we all have to police ourselves. There are many here far more knowledgeable than me, but I have picked up a few snippets of information along the way. If you're in the US, Project Gutenberg is usually safe (but not always) and a good place to start. If you're anywhere else, you need to research the author a bit (and find out the rules for your country as, of course, they are all different  )

I have another short story from Gutenberg - P G Wodehouse THE ROMANCE OF AN UGLY POLICEMAN. I should have finished it in a day or two. It's about 30 minutes in length. I've also posted in Book Suggestions about doing this. I will finish recording today hopefully and then it's just the editing.

This appears to be PD in the US, but as Wodehouse died in 1975, probably nowhere else (most countries seem to have either 50 or 70 years after death rules).

It depends where you are.
1975 was 41 years ago... some countries require you to wait for 50 years after the author's death, for some it's 70. The US relies on publication date (before 1923) regardless of when the author died.
There are some additional 'rules', too - such as the ever popular Agatha Christie, who died in 1976, but has some works that are PD in the U.S., but her estate has said they will sue us if we record. Technically, we believe we would win, but a) we don't have the money for a lawsuit and b) we don't want to fight with anyone :D
