The Hero by W. Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/the-hero-by-w-somerset-maugham/
James Parsons comes home to Little Primpton after serving in the Boer War. The whole town is proud of their new hero, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for risking his life to save a fellow soldier. However, for Jamie, nothing is the same anymore. His varied experience after leaving home has changed his worldview completely and he finds it impossible to go back to his former way of life and beliefs. Torn between individual freedom and obligations towards his family, Maugham portrays Jamie's struggles and social intolerance. ( OCTL7)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/27063
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I can MC this for you :)

I see you done a few sections for group projects. That is always a good idea, so you know what you are getting into  I'll be back in a little bit with a MW (magic window)

OK, here we go:

The Magic Window is now ready to be populated.
Info for first-time login:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxWB83bbALTQYjlENGZ0SVJUWWs

Info on updating the MW -- when you do a solo, you are your own BC (book coordinator):
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kVj409nG_E0XJ5UrrcL7EVx7Qyx-2UQ7dbw4mINi3XQ

You don't have to worry about the ID3 tags - they are filled in automatically when I put it in the catalogue :)

Do you have a DPL up the sleeve? :) If not, we'll put a ~ in front of the title of the book, and someone will show up

Ah, and please ask if you have questions!

There is an epigraph with 2 short quotes and a dedication, do I need to read those?

Thanks! :)

That is up to you :) I think I would include it if I were reading, but I am more than average fond of prefatory materials...

Thanks Kathrine! :) I'll read it then.
Should I record it as a separate file or as part of chapter 1?

It is so short, I would do it as part of chapter 1. If it was a preface proper it might be good to do it as its own section :)

Hi OCTL7 and Kathrine,

I would enjoy being DPL on this project.

OCTL: Good news! :) Often, meta-coordinators leave it to the soloist/book coordinator to welcome a DPL (and will only add the DPL after the soloist/book coordinator has welcomed the DPL). Not that DPLs are turned down, but it is your project, after all :) This time I have just entered Pamela, since I'm here now.

Pamela: Welcome
