Short History of the Christian Church by John Fletcher Hurst (1834 - 1903).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/short-history-of-the-christian-church-by-john-fletcher-hurst/
"The present work has as its basis the series of five Short Histories by the same author, which appeared in the following order: The Reformation, 1884; The Early Church, 1886; The Medieval Church, 1887; The Modern Church in Europe, 1888; and The Church in the United States, 1890. The five volumes form a connected History of the Church nearly down to the present time." (from the preface)
John Fletcher Hurst was an American bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He wrote the 5 histories as Chautauqua textbooks.
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/shorthistoryof00hurs
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): special - Standard, plus noting any possible deviations from the text that change the meaning. Not required to read along

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Sections 2, 3 & 4 PL OK

Boy, that one section was a real exercise in pronunciation!!
I was particularly interested in the portion about women and especially children...also slaves all being killed if there was an unsolved murder.. That certainly does put a different slant where Jesus was coming from! I knew there was a culture different but didn't know quite how extreme.

Section 10 PL OK

It was interesting to listen to the same voice reading well written church history material just after listening to that same voice reading the speakings of very uneducated folk.... although well written, of course.
