Satires of Circumstance, Lyrics and Reveries, with Miscellaneous Pieces by Thomas Hardy (1840 - 1928).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/satires-of-circumstance-lyrics-and-reveries-with-miscellaneous-pieces-by-thomas-hardy/

Satires of Circumstance is a collection of poems by English poet Thomas Hardy, and was published in 1914. It includes the 18 poem sequence "Poems of 1912-13", on the death of Hardy's wife Emma, widely regarded to comprise the best work of his poetic career.

The sequence was extended to the now-classic 21 poems in Collected Poems of 1919. ( Wikipedia)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2863
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi. This collection of 107 poems by Thomas Hardy will be read by two readers Sonia (Kitty) and myself. We will complete the MW together -- so please grant Sonia access to the BC admin section. We will split the poems between us, but on a few occasions we'll read certain poems as dialogues.

It would be great to get a DPL, if anyone is interested.

Thank you for considering this proposal. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

As a huge Hardy fan, may I jump in as DPL?

(Although, bearing in mind that my exams start soon and so my Librivox time is currently restricted to only around an hour a day for the next two months or so, so if you'd rather someone who'd be around 24/7 , I'd completely understand :) )

OK, your MW is up and ready for you and Sonia to fill in as you two would like. I will wait to add Charlotte as your DPL, it is your decision if her restricted schedule will mess things up for finishing this project as quickly as it sounds like it may.

It would be great for Charlotte to be our DPL -- thanks for offering.

Timelines are not a big concern, Cat -- so take your time and put priority on your exams. Best wishes to you.

Thanks, Icequeen, for MC'ing this. Sonia and I will be completing the MW shortly.

So great to get such a quick response! We're blessed!

All the best,

Hi, checking in and reporting for duty. I will populate the MW during the course of the day.

Welcome on board Charlotte. :) I hope you'll have some Hardy in your exams, that way you can treat this as a good preparation.

I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April
and unable to PL during that time. Thank you for your patience.

I did Tess of the D'Urbervilles for my coursework piece (I looked at the presentation of deception in Tess compared to Shakespeare's Sonnets and On Chesil Beach). Half of my literature exam next month is on unseen poetry (compared to Chaucer's Wife of Bath) so familiarizing myself with any sort of poetry is revision technically!

Started populating the MW and already I made a mistake...Section 10 should be for John, so my name needs to be removed.

How can I delete an assigned reader that I put in by mistake ? :help:

edit: ok, I finally managed to delete the wrongly assigned Reader section. One thing learnt again (thanks Carolin)

OK, Charlotte is in as DPL, and we are moving over to Readers Found!

ETA: And, I forgot to add an extra digit to the file name since this one has more than 99 sections.

And here is Section 4: The Ghost of the Past. The partly repetitions at the end of each stanza and the ensuing rhythm somehow gave me a vibe of Poe's The Raven. The theme, dwelling on the past, was not so dissimilar either.
