Short Plays from Dickens by Horace Baker Browne (1874 - 1964).

Here is a collection of 20 short plays created by Horace Browne from scenes in books by Charles Dickens such as Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, Bleak House, and Our Mutual Friend. "For the use of Amateur and School Dramatic Societies" ( ToddHW)

This project is COMPLETE. All audio files can be found on our catalog page at https://librivox.org/short-plays-from-dickens-by-horace-baker-browne/

  • Volunteers outside the USA: Dramatist Horace Browne died in 1964. His work may still be still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1954). It is okay for places like Canada (author's death plus 50 years).

Sorry that this is not public domain for some of you. You could try One Act Play Collection 10 at viewtopic.php?p=1327040#p1327040 !

I have previously offered all the plays actually written by Dickens – here is the next best thing: Dickens’ words put into short plays. I will edit each of the plays.

    Casting is Gender Neutral.
    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/cu31924014524874 (NOTE: whoever reads the Introduction will also need to use https://archive.org/details/shortplaysfromd00dickgoog cuz page xv is missing from the other usually better link)
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

I does not bother me if the same character, appearing in several of the short plays, gets read by multiple people. In other words, you do not have to claim all the roles for a given character.

When you give me your voice credit, please read the whole thing that is in the MW with your name.

Thanks, Todd

This looks like fun! :D I'm not sure how many characters I'm allowed to claim - could I maybe start with Matilda Price, Kate Nickleby, and Mercy Pecksniff? Thanks!

Great. It would help me if people claimed by including section numbers - it's a long MW to hunt through.

Three roles is fine, and you could claim more once these are in. Everyone should note that I am very punctual about canceling overdue claims, so don't take more than you can finish on time!

Thanks, Todd

Todd, this is perfectly PD for Life +50 countries: 1964 + 50 + "the year after it's pd" = 2015...

It was tricky to save recordings under the same name, so except for saying "scene xx" in my intro, i also added brackets containing act number to make it easy to tell. I hope you wouldn't mind.

You should not provide separate files for each scene - instead upload one file for an entire play, containing all the scenes, please. There is only room for one file link for each claimed section.

Downloading to PL.

Oh then I supposed i misunderstood the "upload one file per act". Sorry.

Do I have to put it together and reupload ?
