Our author uses the term "Jonathan" to indicate a citizen of the U.S. Nowadays, I believe the usual term is "Yank." Would a modern Briton understand "Brother Jonathan"?

I don't believe I've heard us called "Yanks". I'm in the US, so I don't know. :)
