Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure by John Cleland (1709 - 1789).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/fanny-hill-memoirs-of-a-woman-of-pleasure-solo-version-by-john-cleland/
This book has been notorious since it first appeared and had been banned several times and in several countries. It is a fictional work that details the adventures of an orphaned girl who ends up working in a brothel in London. Early on she falls in love with a young man named Charles, but only to end up being separated from him. She then recounts her experiences as a prostitute who, in spite of her circumstances, manages to retain her humanity and undying faith in true love.
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/25305
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Did you know that this book has been done before as a group project? It is fine to have another version of the same book, but some people like to be the first person to read a particular book. http://librivox.org/fanny-hill-memoirs-of-a-woman-of-pleasure-by-john-cleland/ It just gives the listener more choices to chose from.

Also, I know that the text link that you have was used in the group project, but we have tightened up our requirements for our text sources since that project was done 10 years ago. That text has a Creative Common/Share Share Alike restriction on it, so it is not as free of restrictions as we would like. There are two versions in Google books that are definitely PD. This one, https://books.google.com/books?id=tYdKAQAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false , is the 1907 reprint of the original book. The second one, https://books.google.com/books?id=phhOAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA3&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=3#v=onepage&q&f=false , appears to be the original 1749 book. The original may be more difficult to read because it has the long 's'. But, either of these sources is preferable to the wikisource text source.

And, just in case you can't see it at Google Books (sometimes it is blocked to people not in the US) here is the 1907 Google book through Hathi Trust. http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=chi.12988720;view=1up;seq=7

So... Is it a bad idea for me to do this as a solo reader?
If it's ok for me to read it, I think I might challenge myself and read from the
original edition.

Oh no, not at all! We like giving our listeners a choice of voice, but some readers don't like to be the second person to read a particular book. I think it would be great to have a solo version that is much newer, ten years is a long time especially here at LV!

Alright, your MW is up and ready for you! We will wait here a day or two to see if we can pick up a DPL. I did change the text source link to the 1749 google book, and I shortened your file name and added solo so that your files don't get mixed up with the group project links.

There's also a Gutenburg text, though you'd have to split the letters into parts.

Do you have a DPL? I'd be willing to volunteer :)
