Thanks again!

I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but I ran the files through Checker. The volumes are too low. They're all around 83/84 dB.

Don't worry about correcting the ones you uploaded so far, but for future recordings, could you bump up your volume? If you can't do it by moving the mic slider any higher, just amplify the files 5 dB.

i've just uploaded 15:

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/finalreport1_15_caib_128kb.mp3

27m56s

i've leveled the file using the suggestion you just sent - give a listen. i have been lessening/attenuating my audio files by about 7db due to an earlier comment/suggestion from av staff on another project. they also suggest the magic number of 89, however i've not been able to find clear guidance on either monitoring or setting db levels after/during recordings, since db ranges from -60 to 0 and 0=60db then 89 would be +29 and this is obviously way too loud.. i am using audacity 2.1 - can you suggest a resource i might use to help with this?

There's a plugin for Audacity that will tell you how much to amplify/attenuate your recordings.
- Click THIS LINK and save the file to your computer - your desktop or somewhere.
- Then go to the folder in which Audacity is installed (on my computer, it's in C:\Program Files (x86)\Audacity) and open the Plug-Ins folder.
- Drag the file you saved into the Plug-Ins folder.
- Start up Audacity and go to Analyze/Manage.
- Find ReplayGain in the list and enable it.
- Now you can highlight your recording, then go to Effects / ReplayGain, and it'll tell you how much to amplify your file.

(I'm impressed that you know the term "attenuate"!) 8-)

i'm a university professor and teach in the area of remote sensing so this is a word we commonly use in different contexts, particularly in reference to models and renderings of 3d surfaces as well as propagation of radiation through different atmospheric conditions. thanks for the help! i'll give this a go.
