Short Story Collection Vol. 063

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/short-story-collection-vol-063/
This collection is for any short story in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain.

Please ask here if the story was published after 1922 or if you are unsure for any other reason about its public domain status. Note that translations attract their own new copyright and must also have been published before 1923.

Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.
After 20 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.
  1. NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
  2. Proof-listening: Standard; or (preferably) against the text, noting any major discrepancies. PL FAQ: viewtopic.php?p=318667#p318667

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in progress (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  3. BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  4. DURING recording:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
    START of recording (Intro)
    • "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    END of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
"End of [Title], by [Author Name]

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  5. AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    shortstory063_[shorttitleinoneword]_[readersinitials]_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) (e.g. shortstory063_scarletletter_ge_128kb.mp3)
  6. Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:
      • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
        Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
      • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: RuthieG
      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread together with the following details:
        • Name of your story
        • Author (birth year - death year)
        • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
        • Source from which you read (e.g. Gutenberg etext url)
        • Length in mm:ss and size in MB of your file
        • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Here you go; I saw part of this story dramatised on a clip on youtube and loved it, so I thought I'd read it.

Lisa, I think your story would fit better in the Children's Short Works Collection, so I'm going to move it there :).

I'll PL right now. I can't commit to DPL'ing as I have a number of DPL's that are lying dormant (and they all seem to awaken together). I'll let you know when my work-load increases and I can no longer follow up here or if you find a DPL.

Thanks, Kim, it was a lot of fun to do.

I'm tempted to read Beasts and Super-beasts as a solo ... when I've finished one of my current two solos!

Nicely read John. PL OK.

Ruth, as editor will you order the pieces before publishing? One very light hearted - if not naughty piece - followed by a very serious subject? Just a thought. I don't know what the process is for short story collections.

Oh, I'll probably shunt them around a bit, but there's no way to make them into a coherent whole. These collections are a disparate bunch of stories, and many people don't listen to them in order, or even listen to them all.

Thanks for the PL!

Thank you, Craig. The title looks a little incongruous for the Short Story Collection, I admit, but it is a legend and it's fine to include it :).

Thanks Ruthie. I didn't think it fit in nonfiction. Thanks for all the work you do.
