 I am sorry I've been missing in action with my claims here, but they are now on top of my list.

I'm recording section 16, and I'm wondering what to do with the "M." here:
The same master painted in fresco in a niche on a corner of the Palace of M. Marguando, an excellent physician, a nude man in foreshortening, representing a S. John, which is held to be a good painting.
Any ideas? :) I checked the OED, and it had lots and lots of ideas... But I'd rather go with the correct one

I would read it as "Monsieur" without missing a beat. the "S." is what I'd have to puzzle out, and I think it is "Saint".

Thanks, Todd

Messer or Messere (accent on second syllable).

Yep! Saint is correct.

I thought I had an abbreviation guide in the original post, but I just checked and apparently I forgot it on this volume. Sorry. :(
