[COMPLETE] Mentor: Famous English Poets - smijen
You can still use Checker (just in case that wasn't clear). Checker has two tabs - Validation and Information. The Validation tab will just give you basic pass/fail information, but the Information tab will give you all your tech specs, so you can see exactly what your volume is.JohnK wrote:I'll make sure I aim for 89dB from now on

Hi
I'm not sure if my earlier posts got lost among the subsequent conversation but, just as a friendly reminder, I've re-submitted sections 3 and 4 at lower volume and would now like to claim Section 5 please.
Thanks
John

I don't see a note in this thread that you had uploaded new files. At least that was not clear to me.
I've marked them Ready for spot PL, and I've assigned you Section 5.
Thanks so much.

Section 2 amplified

The amplify tool in the (very old) version of Audacity I use will not let me amplify by 3db without clipping. So I have amplified by 2db, the maximum it will allow.
Hope this will do or else someone will have to advise me what else to do.

Hi Alan,
Not to worry about the Audacity version. I still use an old one as well. The problem is that you have a few spikes that are much louder than the rest of the recording (look at 1:10, 2:02, 2:35, 2:47). You can only amplify until the loudest point in the recording "touches" the top or bottom of the grid. So you have two choices: (1) you can manually select the loud parts, amplify them by -2 or so, and then amplify the whole thing, or (2) you can use Effect > Leveller, which will even out the volume across the recording. I actually do this on all of my recordings because my volume is always quite variable.
All of that said, this recording is now 88dB, so it's OK for cataloging unless Katherine thinks it sounds noticeably different than the other files. You can try playing around with this just for learning's sake, or you can do it next time.
