The Book of Camping and Woodcraft : a guidebook for those who travel in the wilderness by Horace Kephart (1862 - 1931).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-book-of-camping-and-woodcraft-by-horace-kephart/

In the Introduction to Camping and Woodcraft, Horace Kephart wrote: “My one aim in writing this little book is to make it of practical service to those who seek rest or sport in the wilderness, or whose business calls them thither.” The author further described the content of this book: “In the following chapters I offer some suggestions on outfitting, making camps, dressing and keeping game and fish, camp cookery, forest travel, how to avoid getting lost, and what to do if one does get lost, living off the country, what the different species of trees are good for (from a camper's viewpoint), backwoods handicrafts in wood, bark, skins and other raw materials, the treatment of wounds and other injuries, and some other branches of woodcraft that may be of service when one is far from shops and from hired help.” Camping and Woodcraft was his first book and is actually a collection of articles that had been published in Field and Stream magazine.

Horace Kephart, born in 1862, was raised in Pennsylvania and Iowa then trained as a librarian at Cornell University. He worked in St Louis near the Ozark mountains for a portion of his life (1890 – 1904) then moved to western North Carolina where he lived near Hazel Creek in the Great Smoky Mountains then near Bryson City. Kephart was a campaigner for the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which was created in 1926. He was the author of a number of books and articles on the outdoors.

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/bookofcampingwoo00keph
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Hi Again Jo -

I've already make a mistake! There is the Foreword plus 21 chapters. However, I've made an executive decision and decided to combine the Foreword and Chapter 1. They come up to approx. 5112 words which is about the same length as the other chapters that I've checked the word number on so far.

OK by you? (I know -- when you make an executive decision, consultation is usually not part of the game).

Let me know please and I can start to fill in the MW. If that isn't OK, can you please add a section?

Thanks

That fine Gail. However, I think we should renumber the sections so the combined Foreword and Chapter 1 will be section 1 instead of 0. It's easy to fix now and that way the chapters and section numbers will coincide.

Hi Jo -

I may have to ask for a few more Sections now that I am doing a proper job of counting the words. The Camp Cookery chapter is >19,000 words! Another long one is Edible Plants.

Can I get back to you with a final count?

Clearly, my attention to detail isn't good today.

Cheers

 No problem. In the new system, you can add sections yourself. Just use the Add Section button on the section compiler page to add as many sections as you need. If you end up with too many, let me know and I can delete any extras.

Edible Plants sounds like an interesting read. I may just volunteer for that one if no one beats me to it! (I own a book on Camp Cookery with a recipe for Moose muzzle... - not one I ever intend to try, I might add!)

Hello, I'm new, and my one minute test is still pending, but could I claim CHAPTER VI: A Check-List--Packing Up (section 6)?

Hi Echo --

Thanks for volunteering, I'll put you down for Chapter VI.

I look forward to hearing your 1 minute test. Do have a look at the Newbies Guide..... it has lots of good information. Also, Audacity has come good tools for reducing background and amplifying recordings if needed.

Cheers
