The Bab Ballads by W. S. Gilbert (1836 - 1911).

This project is complete and can be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/the-bab-ballads-by-w-s-gilbert-2/

The Bab Ballads are a collection of light verse by W. S. Gilbert, illustrated with his own comic drawings. Gilbert wrote the Ballads before he became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. In writing the Bab Ballads, Gilbert developed his unique "topsy-turvy" style, where the humor was derived by setting up a ridiculous premise and working out its logical consequences, however absurd. The Ballads also reveal Gilbert's cynical and satirical approach to humor. They became famous on their own, as well as being a source for plot elements, characters and songs that Gilbert would recycle in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The Bab Ballads take their name from Gilbert's childhood nickname, and he later began to sign his illustrations "Bab".

Nothing else quite like the Ballads has ever been produced in the English language. They contain both satire and nonsense, as well as a great deal of utter absurdity. The Ballads were read aloud at private dinner-parties, public banquets and even in the House of Lords. You, oh LibriVox reader, now have the wonderful opportunity to record as many of these great poems as you wish. Please enter into the spirit of the thing and record these with as much fun as possible. ( Wikipedia and Phil Chenevert)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1 month of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

Oh, my.

I'm avoiding taking on new LV works at the moment while I complete a big project, but after more than 20 years adoring Gilbert's wordplay, I'd love to be a part of these!

How quick a turnaround are you looking for on them? I know they're short, but with work as it currently is (and my current LV backlog) I'm not sure I'd be able to get them uploaded in two months... :?:

You poor thing Shakira! You may take up to 6 months if you wish but please don't deny yourself the pleasure of reading some of these funny poems by Gilbert. Hope everyting settles down for you soon.

Took several tries to get the rhythm, but it was a lot of fun when I got there.

Certainly Ken. (although To A Little Maid is a bit risque I think; hope you can handle it  )

Hey there, I'd love to read:

7 Sir Guy The Crusader
10 The Troubadour
13 Disillusioned—By An Ex-Enthusiast
15 To My Bride—(Whoever She May Be)
27 The Force Of Argument
28 The Ghost, The Gallant, The Gael, And The Goblin
31 Tempora Mutantur
32 At A Pantomime. By A Bilious One
34 The Periwinkle Girl
44 Gentle Alice Brown

And this is me being self-restrained. ;)
(And missing out on #3 & #5 - thanks to Ken for sparing me the choice of which to whittle down off the list!)

I'm so glad someone has claimed "To Phoebe." I read it the Short Poetry Collection back in May, so I've a soft spot for it. :9:
