The Bab Ballads are a collection of light verse by W. S. Gilbert, illustrated with his own comic drawings. Gilbert wrote the Ballads before he became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. In writing the Bab Ballads, Gilbert developed his unique "topsy-turvy" style, where the humor was derived by setting up a ridiculous premise and working out its logical consequences, however absurd. The Ballads also reveal Gilbert's cynical and satirical approach to humor. They became famous on their own, as well as being a source for plot elements, characters and songs that Gilbert would recycle in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The Bab Ballads take their name from Gilbert's childhood nickname, and he later began to sign his illustrations "Bab".
Nothing else quite like the Ballads has ever been produced in the English language. They contain both satire and nonsense, as well as a great deal of utter absurdity. The Ballads were read aloud at private dinner-parties, public banquets and even in the House of Lords. You, oh LibriVox reader, now have the wonderful opportunity to record as many of these great poems as you wish. DURING recording:
• At the beginning of the recording, read
"Ballad number [ say ballad number ] of the Bab Ballads by W.S. Gilbert read for LibriVox.org by [your name]" or some variation on that, adding date, location, your personal URL, etc., if you wish.
• [Name of the poem] Then read the poem. At the end of the ballad say
"End of Ballad Number [ ] [name of Ballad] from the Bab Ballads. This recording is in the public domain" - At the end of the last ballad (number 44) say (in addition):
"End of The Bab Ballads, by W. S. Gilbert. "
There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
