Rights Of Man, by Thomas Paine (1737 - 1809).

This book is complete and can be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/rights-of-man-by-thomas-paine/
A book in 2 Parts, published in 1791 and 1792. Part First denounces Edmund Burke’s defense of monarchy and his attacks against the French Revolution, and in plain layman’s language traces the birth and fallacy of monarchy, and the source of man's inalienable rights. Part Second examines the roots and benefits of constitutional government. Written with Paine's dry wit and hard hitting logic, in layman's language, the book was widely circulated in Europe and America. Considered the earliest complete statement of republican principles, Paine opposes the idea of hereditary kings and speaks against the belief in dictatorial government as necessary to a well-managed society. Paine's visionary call for republicanism and social welfare was generations ahead of its time, and landed him in prison and narrowly escaping the guillotine! NOTE: Long chapters of this document have been divided into Parts to comply with audio file size requirements. While not designated thus by Paine, every effort has been made to create logical divisions.( ~ Summary by Michele Fry) There were two proof listeners for this book: Michele Fry and AdeledePignerolles

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3742 Recommended: Those who prefer may find color coded sections designated more clearly at Google Docs.
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Level of prooflistening: Special (I will DPL this project, except for the sections I record, reading along with the text, and notating any obvious mispronunciations, discrepancies that change the author's meaning, repeats, stumbles, etc.) Newbie readers are welcome. If your editing skills aren't comfortable to you yet, no worries . . . a little practice and you'll be right up to snuff in no time at all.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

The Magic Window is up and you are in as BC Michele. If we get another DPL tell me and I'll add them in. :D

If you need a PL for any part of this, I'd be glad to help! I wasn't sure whether you wanted one or not but if you do I'm interested.

Thank you!

Adele, Thanks for this nice offer. I'll be PL'ing most files, but you are welcome to PL mine. Please read PL directions in the first post, which are designated as 'SPECIAL'. I should have my files uploaded soon.

Sections 00 - 03 are uploaded as follows:

https://librivox.org/uploads/philchenevert/rightsofman_00_paine_128kb.mp3

https://librivox.org/uploads/philchenevert/rightsofman_01_paine_128kb.mp3

Phil, I am debating with myself whether to turn this into a solo. I sure do enjoy reading Paine. He is so delightfully sarcastic, so logical, so good hearted! I feel guilty keeping him to myself, but then I think Paine needs a strong male voice. I'll continue to fill in the MW but please don't move to Readers Wanted until I decide what I'm going to do. It's almost 10 hours long. Humm! Humm! Humm! I have other projects in the fire (no solos at present, though). Can I handle them all? Is anyone else interested in reading Paine? What to do???????

A wonderful dilemma if you ask me. Too many fun things to do, eh Michele? We can leave this in the launch pad for 3 more days or so there is no rush. You always have the option of leaving this open as a group and setting up a solo of it for the entire thing or with perhaps fewer sections. It doesn't need to be either/or. As a group project this will probably take a year or more to fill up and catalog unless a Paine buff shows up.

Some PL notes for the Editor's Preface:

Your intro is different from what the first post says. I don't know if you need to change it or not; you might want to check it out.

At 1:24, I heard "Rotterdam" instead of "Rotherham". Since Rotterdam is in Germany and Rotherham is in England I thought it changed the meaning.

At 3:10-11 you said "Louis the sixteenth", whereas it should have been "Louis the fourteenth". In that quote they are speaking of Louis the fourteenth, but all of the other references in this section are to Louis XVI.

At 8:10-11 you said "politically true" but the text says "politically is true". I think this changes the meaning.

At 12:29-30 you said "Edmund" but the name is "Edward".

Pronunciation:
At 3:37 the word "arraignment" is pronounced "arr-eh-nment". Is this the way you pronounce it? I have heard it "arr-eye-nment" as well.

At 6:31, same thing for the word "era".

The Dedication is great! You didn't say the section number at the end; you just said "end of section". You may want to change this.

Overall, though, they sound great. I love your accent! You didn't read too fast that I couldn't understand or too slow that I was couldn't keep track of sentences. I will listen to the other 2 soon.

Keep up the great work!

Just one thing for Section 3:

@ 2:40: "Thoulouse" is supposed to be pronounced "Too-loose".

I also forgot to mention that the Dedication has only 3 seconds of silence at the end; could you put those on when you re-upload it?

Sounds great! I'm now able to access the MW as well.

Well, I haven't submitted Section 4 yet so I presume you meant Section 3, which of course is the 4th file, because the first file is Section 00, because sometimes calling the Introduction 00 lines the subsequent chapter numbers up with the section numbers . . . . . but not always! I know, it's screwed up. Loved your PL efforts, Adele. So grateful that you found the errors and knew how to pronounce Thoulouse (I'd never heard of it). Where are you from? Must be somewhere in Europe.

I've made all the changes and uploaded files 00, 01, and 02 for spot PL. Only exceptions, on the pronunciations of arraignment and era, I am satisfied with my pronunciations, and I didn't find less than 5 seconds of silence on any of my files. Please check again and if you find it, let me know and I'll happily fix it. It would help if you refer to each section by Section Number, rather than "Dedication" or "Preface", or whatever it's title is.

Thank you so much. You are doing a great job so far. Phil knows, I am thrilled to have a super attentive PL'er. I may just have to read the whole project so we can 'hang out'. :D
