PL OK! However - is that tune for "over the hills" your own, a PD traditional tune, or....

Thanks, Todd

Hi Todd

The song is an old traditional recruiting song, I'm certain it would be PD. There are a number of versions on YouTube, I quite like this one:

Great, since as Serjeant Kite I think I have to sing it too.

Here's an article establishing its ancient roots - and mentioning that it is in this play!

We still need to find a source for the tune. Wikipedia says it was published in Thomas D'Urfey's Wit and Mirth, or Pills to Purge Melancholy. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over_the_Hills_and_Far_Away_%28traditional_song%29

I've found a facsimile of that book on Archive, in 6 volumes, but didn't see this title under "O" in the index in any of the volumes.

No more time to look tonight, but wanted to share what I had found so far. You would think with as traditional and popular this tune is, that it shouldn't be difficult to find a musical version published 1922 or before . . .

[And that youtube video is stunning. Love the base drummer dressed in a tiger skin, complete with the head on his back. The Brits can sure do military ceremony well.]

@ 3:23 the line is "The March beer at the Raven. I have been doubly serving the king, raising men" but the underlined portion is missing.

In Act 4, you stopped too soon. There are two more lines.
Lucy. Oh, madam! a thousand.

Kite. I must beg your patience till another time, for I expect more company this minute; besides, I must discharge the gentleman under the table.

Lucy. O, pray, sir, discharge us first!
Other acts PL OK.
