Magna Carta Commemoration Essays by various authors.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/magna-carta-commemoration-essays/
On 15th June 1215 the Magna Carta was sealed under oath by King John at Runnymede, on the bank of the River Thames near Windsor, England. 2015 is the 800th anniversary of this charter, which led eventually to the rule of constitutional law in England and beyond. This book of essays by distinguished academics was published in 1917.

I am hoping to be able to catalogue this by the 15th June 2015. (Ruth Golding)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section(s) you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

N.B. Some essays are up to 20,000 words long and divided into several sections. I should prefer one reader per essay if possible. Please note also that some sections are not PD for readers in Europe and/or Australia, and other countries which observe copyright of author's death +70 years. Details of authors may be found in the post following.

De rerum natura, there is much Latin (and some Old French) in some of these essays. Please ask if you need assistance.

There are also many footnotes. Please use your best judgement on whether to include them or omit them.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? I am hoping to be able to catalogue this by the 15th June 2015. We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will usually be granted, unless the deadline is approaching. I appreciate that this is not an easy read. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/magnacartacommem00malduoft
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I would love to read Sections 12-14, The Influence of Magna Carta on American Constitutional Development. (I checked first to see that there wouldn't be any Latin to tangle with!)

Ruth,

Never eschewing a challenge, I would be happy to read the financial records essay, and can you put me down for the intro as well? I should be able to complete both within the next 12 months! 8-)

[I shall be omitting any footnotes with tables as a matter of principal, and so glad that Maria has volunteered in advance to ghost read any Latin or old French passages that pop up in my sections!]

For the record (and my future reference), I am attempting to follow the reconstructed ancient Latin pronunciation found here: http://www.ai.uga.edu/mc/latinpro.pdf, except that I can't get "v" like "w" in wet, so I am saying it like "v" in very.

May whoever proof listens to my sections to please have mercy upon my poor bedraggled tongue, and on the King's Remembrancer and the Lord Chancellor's Remembrancer, upon the Upper Exchequer and his Pipe Rolls, and on the Dialogus, the Rescriptum, the Scaccarium and Recepta!

Thanks, MaryAnn. I fully appreciate that this project will probably be one of the most difficult things we have ever attempted. We will all do our best, and that is all we can do. I hope it will end up a fitting contribution to the 800th anniversary. Most interesting site here: http://magnacarta800th.com/

Hi Ruth,

I have just chanced upon this, and noted that the proposed cataloguing is 15th June 2015.

So, having been born and raised in Staines, and enjoyed blackberry picking around Runnymede, I would like to read section 2 please?

Preface is PL OK. btw, a native of Illinois would say it ill-in-OI. It's so cute to hear it with a British accent!

Thanks, MaryAnn. I imagine I said ILL-in-oi ;). Depending on how obsessively perfectionist I feel, I may change it .

Oh no, don't change it! It's too cute!

I wonder how people elsewhere (especially those who actually speak French) figure out how we say the French place name over here in the Midwest. There are no rules it seems - for example, Des Moines and Des Plaines I would say as de-MOIN and des-PLANES.

Moment of distraction - we are having bands of gentle showers pass through this morning and the robins are out in force, having a ball, finding and eating worms in the grass . . . Ah, summer . . .
