Hello Elizabby

For the reader prifile, the name is Philippe (one "L", two "P"s - French style).
Do you need anything else ?

I have a question :
Would you prefer I post the recording in three or four bits,
( which would allow you to see if I’m on the right track ),
or all in one go ?

That's fine, but are you sure you don't want a second name? Also, I forgot to mention I can add a URL if you have a blog or website or anything.

Post everything together please - it isn't that long a section, and after Proof Listening (PL) you can just go back to the original file and make changes if there are any words missed or unclear. (I always save both the original Audacity files, as well as the extracted MP3 until I'm sure the file has been received here and approved. I usually keep them until the project hits the catalogue, just in case of late changes!)

Hi Elizabby

Just “Philippe” is fine.

I have no Blog.
And I prefer no links to my websites.

I suppose you can delete these five last posts so as not to clog up this thread.

Have a nice one,
Ph.

Hello

I’m sorry to bother you, but I do need a little help.

Could you listen to this first recording and tell me if I’m on the right track ?
Recording : 2 min 20 sec.

Thanks,
Philippe.

Lovely reading! Just two little notes:

1) I do need the intro (and outro) as described in the first post. For this chapter it should sound like this:

Part 1, Chapter 6 of "In Desert and Wilderness". This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org. (If you like add here "Read by Philippe".) In Desert and Wilderness by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Translated by Max Anthony Drezmal. Part 1, Chapter 6.

(Author's name pronunciation is here: http://uploads.librivox.org/xx-nonproject/sienkiewicz.mp3 )

(If you want to know how the finished product should sound, have a listen to Chapter 2 which is linked in the MW. David hasn't put in "Part 1" before his "Chapter 2" but otherwise it's all there.)

2) Just a tech-y fine tuning thing - I'm getting a bit of an odd buzz in the background. Have you done a noise-cleaning on this file?

The reading itself was lovely, and I love your expression and particularly the little laugh which fits with the text. That's great - a more expressive reading gives meaning to the text and makes it more fun to listen to! Also, please add the outro at the end, and leave 5 seconds of silence after you're done. Outro for this chapter would simply say "End of Part 1 Chapter 6".

Did you have any more specific questions for me? It sounds to me like you have the whole recording thing going down very nicely!

Good morning Elizabby

1 )
Intro is done and will be added.
I have already listened to David to get the pronunciation of the author’s name and of “Messrs.”

2 )
Yes. I have done the noise cleaning bit.

I’m afraid I don’t hear the background “odd buzz”.
For my test, Ruth supposed that it comes from the sound card itself.
Recording on home computer, Mic plugged in with jack, not USB.

I’ll try and clean it up a bit more,
but cleaning up a noise you don’t hear can be a bit touchy, don’t you think ?

------------

I suppose that you can delete the uploaded file so as not to clutter up the data base ?

Have a nice Monday,
Philippe.

Heyo, Phillipe!

I think my pronunciation of "Messrs." might be no good. I guessed it was short for the French "Monsieur," although my check of the infallible Wikipedia seems to indicate "Mister" was the correct way to read it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messr I really don't know for sure...

Elizabby, any guidance of this point? Also, I'll be sure to fix my intro to include "Part 1" with any other edits required from proof listening. Thanks!

Hello David

It seems that you’ve got the pronunciation right.

--> Mess-ers

“Messrs” probably comes from the French Messieurs (pronounced maysiers) and has been Anglesized.
It means Gentlemen.

I’ve pronounced it half English half French style.

An audio here : http://www.macmillandictionary.com/pronunciation/american/Messrs

and here : http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/messrs

All the best,
Philippe.

Hello All

I've done my homework.

The file is here : https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/indesertandwilderness_06_sienkiewicz_128kb.mp3

Recording length : 11 min 27 sec
File size : 11 mb.

All critics and suggestions are welcome

Hope all is well.
I’ve eliminated as much noise as I can.
Checker gave me the OK, although the recording is sometimes above the 0.5 limit
( can I fix this somehow for future recordings without diminishing the volume ? ).

I really did pick a tongue twister for my first recording, didn’t I ?

David.
Although I’m a little familiar with Arabic pronunciation, I found this.
It may help out : http://fr.forvo.com/languages/ar/

Just stick the word in the box in the upper right hand corner named “Rechercher un mot”.

Lovely reading - you did a fantastic job with all those difficult names!

The volume sounds fine to me, but what I do with a sensitive mic is to dial down the volume just a touch (to 95% or something like that) then use the amplifier or the compressor to bring it up to the final required volume AFTER noise cleaning. I find this gives the best sound for my setup.

What I generally do is to save the file unprocessed, then play around with the settings a bit to see how it sounds. Try the amplifier, try the compressor, try the leveller, try the equaliser, etc. This is also handy because if any changes need to be made, I can then make them on the unprocessed file and redo the compression after, which gives a more even sound.

But this is fine - you can adjust these other bits if you want, but the product as you have it listens perfectly! Want to claim any more chapters? Practice makes perfect, you know... ;)

Welcome to Librivox! This is a great project to start with, as the chapters are relatively short!

However, I see that you are brand new here, so there is one thing I need you to do before you start recording for us.

You need to do a 1 minute test. This is not an audition, but it is useful to make sure your technical stuff is all up to scratch.

Full instructions are here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test.

You might also find this useful! http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Newbie_Guide_to_Recording,

Otherwise it would be a shame to do the recording and then for us not to be able to use it!

Also, to add you as a reader I need your name as you want it to appear in the catalogue, and your website if you want your profile to link to it.

Any other questions, post back here!

I did record a 1 minute test but when I went to upload it it kept saying my log in or password was wrong.

Glad you are getting it sorted out - remember to post the link to your 1-min-test in the Listeners and Editors forum, not here on this thread. I don't have the technical ability to check it.
