The Apology by Anne Finch (1661 - 1720).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-apology-by-anne-kingsmill-finch/
Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea, was an English poet, the third child of Sir William Kingsmill of Sydmonton Court and his wife, Anne Haslewood. She was well-educated as her family believed in good education for girls as well as for boys.
In her works Finch drew upon her own observations and experiences, demonstrating an insightful awareness of the social mores and political climate of her era. But she also artfully recorded her private thoughts, which could be joyful or despairing, playful or despondent. The poems also revealed her highly developed spiritual side. (Summary from Wikipedia)
Thank you to Ruth for her excellent poems over the last weeks.

Set your recording software to:

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
The Apology by Anne Finch, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
'TIS true I write and tell me by what Rule
I am alone forbid to play the fool,
To follow through the Groves a wand'ring Muse
And fain'd Ideas's for my pleasures chuse.
Why shou'd it in my Pen be held a fault
Whilst Mira paints her face, to paint a thought?
Whilst Lamia to the manly Bumper flys
And borrow'd Spiritts sparkle in her Eyes,
Why shou'd itt be in me a thing so vain
To heat with Poetry my colder Brain?
But I write ill and there-fore shou'd forbear.
Does Flavia cease now at her fortieth year
In ev'ry Place to lett that face be seen
Which all the Town rejected at fifteen?
Each Woman has her weaknesse; mine indeed
Is still to write tho' hopelesse to succeed.
Nor to the Men is this so easy found;
Ev'n in most Works with which the Witts abound
(So weak are all since our first breach with Heav'n)
Ther's less to be Applauded then forgiven.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Here is my version of this week's poem:

Duration: 1:42

I love the very snide and clever feminine sarcasm--sounds quite up-to-date.

Thank you Len and Malcolm, good readings.

Jemma, I've applied some Noise Reduction to your file.

Welcome to LibriVox Sandra, good first reading, all the specs are correct.
You have some interesting background noise in your file, it almost sounds like interference of some sort, I ran your file through auphonic and it cleaned up nicely, you can hear the results in this project's catalog page. :D
I edited out your reading of the standard Librivox disclaimer, only the Poetry intro is needed for these projects. Please use the _ (underscore) and not - in the filenames.

Hello David, welcome back.

Don't know if you've noticed, but it's been reported recently that my recordings have some background hiss, musn't allow hissing to start creeping in. So, I've been tinkering all week with my settings, so I'm unsure if this will be PLOK. I'll be using your PL powers to set my new audacity benchmarks.

Great job Amanda, Lee Ann and raven.

Yes raven, there is a noticeable background hiss, (39.2 dB according to Checker) probably not much you can do with equipment and/or Audacity settings, but a Noise Reduction pass using values of 24 | 0.0 | 150 | 0.15 have given me good results in the past.
I've applied NR using those settings and uploaded the new file.
