Set your recording software to:Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible! As David has given me another week, I crave your indulgence for this week's poem, which can be found here.
I sang Elgar's setting of this poem last night in a concert at a tiny and very ancient Kent church to raise funds for reshingling the spire. Intrigued to find that the lyrics were by Andrew Lang, I discovered that the version in Lang's 1884 book (and most poetry sites) omitted the wonderful third verse. But searching about, I found the original published in The Century Magazine, May, 1882. Lang originally refused Elgar permission to use the words but eventually, I am glad to say, relented. My Love dwelt in a Northern land,
A dim tower in a forest green
Was his, and far away the sand
And gray wash of the waves was seen
The woven forest-boughs between:
And through the Northern summer night
The sunset slowly died away,
And herds of strange deer, silver-white,
Came gleaming through the forest gray,
And fled like ghosts before the day.
And oft, that month, we watched the moon
Wax great and white o'er wood and lawn,
And wane, with waning of the June,
Till, like a brand for battle drawn,
She fell, and flamed in a wild dawn.
I know not if the forest green
Still girdles round that castle gray,
I know not if the boughs between
The white deer vanish ere the day:
The grass above my Love is green;
His heart is colder than the clay.
