The Description of a New World, Called the Blazing-World by Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle.
The Blazing World by Margaret Cavendish is, all at once, a satire, a treatise on natural philosophy, a work of proto-science fiction, and a defiant venture into a scientific world where women were not usually allowed. It tells the tale of a young Lady who is kidnapped by a man that tries to sail away with her. Through divine interference, however, the ship is tossed into a storm and everyone but the Lady perishes. Blown up to the North Pole, she inadvertently passes into to another world, the Blazing World, where she is almost immediately made supreme ruler. As the Lady begins to exercise her will, Cavendish lays out her own Utopia and discusses a wide range of scientific, political, social, and religious topics. But when a war breaks out in her home world, what will the Lady do with all power of the Blazing World behind her? ( Sarah Terry)

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is my first solo recording! I wasn't exactly sure what to say for the number of sections in this book. It actually only has two parts, and no real chapters, so the splits are going to be based on mostly on recording time, I think. I put ten sections as an estimate, so hopefully that works for now?

Thanks!

OK, all set. Since this is your first solo, here are the instructions for the MW (since soloists are the BCs for their projects); and here is a more detailed version of the first section of the previous document (the first login section).

That's fine. The only limit we suggest on time is 72 minutes as a maximum, since that's what will fit on a CD.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Beyond that, have fun!

Thank you both so much, Karen and Paul! I'm excited to get started! :D

I've updated the MW, and broken up the two parts of the book into more manageable sections. I should be getting the first files up in a few days!

Best,
Sarah

Sarah, just wanted to say I think it's so cool you're recording this text! (It's been on my "to do" list for years and was likely to stay there for many more, at the rate I record these days...) We need more early women writers in our catalog! :D

Thanks, Elizabeth! I'm really excited to get to record it! I'm a little obsessed with Margaret Cavendish actually, haha - I wrote a huge research paper on this book and other proto-science fiction texts when I was in college. What Virginia Woolf said about her is just about one of my favorite quotations ever -- "What a vision of loneliness and riot the thought of Margaret Cavendish brings to mind! as if some giant cucumber had spread itself over all the roses and carnations in the garden and choked them to death."

Hopefully I'll do the text justice :)

I have the introduction up and ready, and I've recorded the first two sections, but they still need editing. I should have them up in the next day or two.

Thanks!

PL Introduction: Fantastic job, Sarah! You've got a really clear diction and you're really able to draw the meaning out of the older phraseology.

There's just one small point (and you may want to edit the top post in the thread to remind yourself of this) - you now need to append _128kb to the filename, as in theblazingworld_00_cavendish_128kb.mp3 . Otherwise, it's great.

Thank you so much, Paul! I've added _128kb to the end of the filename, and I've changed it in the first post so I remember :D

Eventually, when they've worked their way through all the big things that need to be fixed, the template will be changed to include that by default.
