First World War Centenary Collections.

These projects are now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalogue pages: http://librivox.org/ww1-poetry/ and http://librivox.org/ww1-prose-vol-i/

A PDF of short summaries of each item is now available and will be catalogued with each project. Please check and tell me if you find errors or examples of stupidity on my part. See https://librivox.org/uploads/ruthieg/wwisummaries.zip

There are two Magic Windows in this post: poetry and fiction/non-fiction. Readers may submit up to 5 contributions in the Poetry collection, and unlimited contributions in the Fiction/Non-fiction collection.

Some suggestions for readings may be found in this post.

I also wish to produce a podcast for the Centenary, and have posted here asking readers to contribute a short piece about their recordings for these collections. I shall be really pleased if we can make this work.

This collection is in commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War on 28th July 1914. Contributions in any language will be welcome, and as long as they are relevant to the theme may be poetry, fiction or non-fiction. Recordings should not exceed 70 minutes in duration.

I should prefer there to be no duplicate recordings in this collection, so please post to state your intention, so that I can add your claim to the Magic Window.

NB. If your recording is of less than 5 minutes' duration, please use the short poetry disclaimer instead (in green below):
  • NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
  • Is there a deadline? This collection will be catalogued in good time for the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, i.e. 28th July 2014.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    ============================================
  • BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  • DURING recording:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
    START of recording (Intro)
    • "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

Or, for recordings of less than 5 minutes:
      START:
[Title] by [author], read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
  • END of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
"End of [Title of Work], by [Author Name]"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Read by [your name]"

Or, for recordings of less than 5 minutes:
      END:
End of [Title] by [author]. This recording is in the public domain.

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  • AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Save files as 128 kbps MP3 (all lower-case, with no leading articles) wwi_[titleinafewwords]_[author]_[yourinitials]_128kb.mp3
    (e.g. wwi_forthefallen_binyon_rg_128kb.mp3)
  • Example ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
    Artist: Author Name
    Title: Title of Work
Album: First World War Centenary Collection

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:
      https://librivox.org/login/uploader
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ruthieg
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

    Any questions?
    Please post below

I have a recording of The Red Flower by Henry Van Dyke that I've been meaning to upload to the Short Poetry Collection for a while now. I'll upload it her instead. It will hopefully be with you by the end of today or tomorrow, I have a batch of uploading I need to do.

Ruth, here is a whole bunch of documents concerning the Austrian-Hungarian side before the war (and shortly after):
http://wwi.lib.byu.edu/index.php/Die_%C3%96sterreichisch-Ungarischen_Dokumente_zum_Kriegsausbruch

I am not entirely sure whether these documents are okay to be read.
1) the site claims copyright on the forma, but that's normal:
http://wwi.lib.byu.edu/index.php/Disclaimer_and_Copyright_Notice
2) On top of the page above it says "published (Berlin: National-Verlag, 1923)", but

3) the links in some of the documents go to a "redbook austria" which can be found in a book from 1915:
https://archive.org/details/dasregenbogenbuc01beer

I would say the original documents in their original language are ok.

What do you think? Some of the original documents (not the translations) are in French, by the way, for example the final declaration of war, a short three-line telegram from Austria to Serbia...
Cheers, Ava.

Oh, what a shame - I was rather premature in submitting three 1st World war poems to the poetry collection recently - For the Fallen was one, which I had recorded elsewhere. I am posting the link here https://archive.org/details/atrilogyofremembrance_cb in case anyone is interested in the stories behind the 3 poems, and I'll look for something to contribute, Ruth. :)

Rather early, and I think you're still sorting out the first post, so let me know if you need any of the details changed:

Here is The Red Flower by Henry Van Dyke (1852 - 1933):
https://librivox.org/uploads/ruthieg/wwi_redflower_vandyke_lkp_128kb.mp3
(2:01)
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/9388

(BTW, Ruth, your filename in the first post is missing the _128kb and still includes ## for the section number.)
So little space, so much to say.

Is it ok to record a poem from a longer book?
Wildgänse rauschen durch die Nacht
Mit schrillem Schrei nach Norden –[187]
Unstäte Fahrt! Habt acht, habt acht!
Die Welt ist voller Morden.

Fahrt durch die nachtdurchwogte Welt,
Graureisige Geschwader!
Fahlhelle zuckt, und Schlachtruf gellt,
Weit wallt und wogt der Hader.

Rausch' zu, fahr' zu, du graues Heer!
Rauscht zu, fahrt zu nach Norden!
Fahrt ihr nach Süden übers Meer –
Was ist aus uns geworden!

Wir sind wie ihr ein graues Heer
Und fahr'n in Kaisers Namen,
Und fahr'n wir ohne Wiederkehr,
Rauscht uns im Herbst ein Amen!
It's from "Der Wanderer zwischen beiden Welten" by Walter Flex

Nastya: Thank you! I am so glad this collection will be truly multilingual.

Lucy: Thank you, Lucy. Yes, I shouldn't set up projects at midnight ;).

Carol: I have been waiting 5 years to record For the Fallen! Binyon only came out of copyright for me on January 1st. I hope you can find some other things to record :).

Julia: That would be great. I have assumed you would like to do it, so have entered it in the Magic Window under your name. Let me know if this is not the case.

Ava: I'll have a look at those, but I would imagine they will all be fine.

Hello Ruth,

I'd like to record these 3 items, please.
The first is an overview and the other two letters are first hand accounts of the Christmas Truce 1914

A general overview:

Extract from letter written home by Rifleman C H Brazier, Queen’s Westminsters of Bishops Stortford:

Thanks, Carol. The first one is a bit of a problem, as the LV policy is to record only things that have been published (i.e. not just on websites). The other two are fine.

I am thinking of staking my claim to Chapter 2 of The First World War, 1914-1918, by Lt. Col. Charles à Court Repington (1858-1925) https://archive.org/details/firstworldwar19101repiuoft.The chapter deals with the outbreak and first year of the war.

ETA Still undecided about this. He was apparently a rather controversial figure, and not actually a colonel during the war itself, but a war correspondent.
