Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 024
This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/short-ghost-and-horror-collection-024-by-various/

NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.
  1. How to submit a story, and 'how it all works' here
Please select and record any short ghost or horror story in the public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. There is no need to "sign-up" before recording... as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)

A ghost or horror story should have something of an otherworldly or gruesome nature at its core. (Preferably, it should be nominally fictional, but there are enough 'true' ghost stories that will be accepted into this collection as well.) Take a look at the various collections in this forum and decide which collection your story would work best in.

Please note that a lot of Lovecraft's work is still under copyright - there's a thread here that has an up-to-date list of confirmed PD stories.

Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which story you are submitting to the collection. Please include all this information:

    • link to the text source
    • author name
    • title of the story
    • duration (runtime) of the file
    • if this is your first recording: how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog.

Read points 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording, and how to send your file.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
No. This collection will be open until it is full (20 stories have been submitted), at which point another one may be started.
  4. Where can I find horror and ghost stories?
Good sources for ghost and horror stories are Literary Gothic and Classic Horror Short Stories. Of course there will also be bunches on Gutenberg.

Previous Short Ghost and Horror Collections can be found here - duplicate versions are fine, though not in the same volume.
  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  6. DURING recording:
Leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your file.
Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "[Story title] by [Author name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
      "[Story title] by [Author name]."
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Story Title]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!
  7. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit (optional).

The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
File Name: (lower case, separated by underscores):

    ghohor024_shorttitleinoneword_author_readersinitials_128kb.mp3, e.g. ghohor024_roomintower_benson_ce_128kb.mp3

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    - Title/Name: [Story Title] (e.g. The Room in the Tower)
    - Artist: [Author Name] (e.g. E.F. Benson)
    - Album: LibriVox Short Ghost and Horror Story Collection Vol. 024

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Any questions?
Please post below or PM me.

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi, Chiquito--Good story!

Section 01 (The Mystery of Joseph Laquedem):
--At ~37:04 the portion in red is omitted ""The sand!" She pointed; and well I remember the gesture--the very gesture of the hand in the fresco--the forefinger extended, the thumb shut within the palm. "The sand. . .he told me. . ."

Also, volume is a bit high at 93.3 dB if you could bring it down 3 or 4 dB. And the link that you posted still seems to have the bit rate at 192 kbps instead of the required 128 kbps--?? Finally--and I don't suppose that this is a big thing--you show "bierce" as the author in the file name instead of "quiller-couch".

Thank you, Chiquito--great first section for this collection! :)
Kind regards,
Lucretia

Hi, Don--Happy New Year to you as well! Image Great story--one of my favorites--and a great reading! I have no notes on the reading of the text itself, just a couple of technical things.

Section 02 (The Cask of Amontillado):
--In the Intro, right after the LibriVox disclaimer, we say the "Story Title" and "Author's Name" again (see the instructions in the first post of this thread). Could you please add that piece in order to comply with the Intro requirements? I think that you could probably just "copy and paste" from the first part of your track, so no extra recording would be required.
--Also, notice the format of the file name that is specified in the instructions in the first post. When you upload the file again, please use this format for the file name:

ghohor024_shorttitleinoneword_author_readersinitials_128kb.mp3, e.g. ghohor024_caskamontillado_poe_da_128kb.mp3

And just an FYI for your future recordings: Your volume is on the upper edge of our acceptable limit at 91.9 dB (our goal is 89 dB)--so try not to go any higher.

When you have uploaded the edited file, post the link here again along with the new length of the recording. I'll take another quick look at it. I know that there are a lot of nitsy little procedural details to become familiar with around here--but hang in there and keep recording for us! You will soon be doing it all without giving it a second thought. Let me know if you have any questions or run into a problem. We'll be happy to give you a hand. :)

Lucretia,

Sorry for the problems. This is my first recording for LibriVox. I'll get the hang of it soon.
I think I am supposed to tell you how I would like to be listed in the catalog.
I would like to just use my name: Don Alsup. My podcast address is: www.shelbysystems.com/podcast.

I believe I have everything corrected in the MP3 file:
Added the title and author name after the LibriVox disclaimer.
Formatted the file name (the way it is suggested in the header of this thread).
Reduced the volume to 89 db.

Here is the link to the new MP3 file:

Hi again, Don--No apology needed. You did a great job! I spot-checked your edited file--all good. Thank you!

Section 02 (The Cask of Amontillado): PL OK

At this point, our Meta-Coordinator (MC), Bart, will have to update the database to add your Catalog Name and URL link--I am not able to do so. I look forward to hearing more from you! :)

Hey I just had a really quick question if you don't mind - since I am new to this.
Will this entire collection be posted to LibriVox (available for download) at one time or are the individual stories posted separately?

Thanks for your help,

Don
