Short Story Collection Vol. 058

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/short-story-collection-vol-058/
This collection is for any short story in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain.

Please ask here if the story was published after 1922 or if you are unsure for any other reason about its public domain status. Note that translations attract their own new copyright and must also have been published before 1923.

Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.
NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.

After 20 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

Proof-listening: Standard; or (preferably) against the text, noting any major discrepancies. PL FAQ: viewtopic.php?p=318667#p318667
  • Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in progress (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Genres for the project: Short Stories

    Keywords that describe the book:

    ============================================
  • BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  • DURING recording:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
    START of recording (Intro)
    • "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]. - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

    END of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
"End of [Title], by [Author Name]

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  • AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    shortstory058_[shorttitleinoneword]_[readersinitials]_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) (e.g. shortstory058_scarletletter_ge_128kb.mp3)
  • Example ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!
    • Title/Name: [Title]
    • Artist: [Author Name]
    • Album: LibriVox Short Story Collection Vol. 058

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:
      • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
        Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
      • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: ruthieg - RuthieG
      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread together with the following details:
        • Name of your story
        • Author (birth year - death year)
        • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
        • Source from which you read (e.g. Gutenberg etext url)
        • Length in mm:ss and size in MB of your file
        • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

    Any questions?

This is my first recording and first time doing noise removal. Let me know if there is anything else I need to tweak.

Thank you, Erin. The volume has decreased by 10 dB since your test thread, so is now much too low. Did this happen at the noise removal stage? It can happen if you select a few seconds of speech instead of just background noise when you do the Effect | Noise Removal 'Get Noise Profile'. I have tried amplifying and applying noise removal again, but it has a highly detrimental effect on your voice.

If you still have the raw file, please try selecting a few seconds of silence (no speech) and clicking Effect | Noise Removal and 'Get Noise Profile'. Then select the whole recording (Ctrl+A) and click Effect | Noise Removal again. I shall have to guess at the settings to use, but try 12 dB noise removal, and 3 dB sensitivity. Leave the other settings unchanged. Then export and re-upload, please, using the same file name.

Is the short story "A Relic of the Pliocene" by Jack London eligible for this collection? I cannot find it on the LibriVox site.

Yes, it's included in The Faith of Men, published 1904, so definitely in the public domain. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1096 or https://archive.org/details/faithofmenothe00lond

Name of your story - The House of the Past
Author - Algernon Blackwood (1869 - 1951)
Source from which you read - http://www.classichorrorstories.com/texts/house.txt
Length in mm:ss and size in MB of your file - File Length: 13m 06s, Filesize: 11.9MB

This is my first ever LibriVox recording (apart from my test!) I hope it's up to standard!!! You can just put my name as Robert Dixon, that's fine.

Very nervous now, I hope it's ok!! Thanks very much.

Rob.

No need whatsoever to be nervous, Rob. You have a lovely intimate way of story-telling and I can tell that I shall enjoy listening very much.

Here is your personal catalogue page: https://librivox.org/reader/8902. The reader section details are very useful for keeping track of the sections you have claimed and their proof-listening status. You can access it by right-clicking your name in the Magic Window and opening in a new tab. Many people also bookmark/favorite the page in their browser.

I shall be proof-listening in the next day or two, so check back to see if any edits are needed. I have taken the liberty of using this text source for the catalogue instead of the Classic Horror Stories one, which doesn't have any publication date on it.

Hey. I'd like to record a couple of short stories from The Gateless Gate - a collection of Japanese Zen stories. They are really short (like 2-3 min), but they all speak about the same thing. So should I do them as one story in one file or different stories?

Wikisource has placed a Creative Commons license on these, John. I should prefer you to use the versions at http://www.sacred-texts.com/bud/glg/index.htm.

The translations were published in 1934, and as such, rely for their public domain status on the non-renewal of US copyright. Sacred Texts are usually diligent in their research on this, but I should warn you that IF we ever get a copyright claim, we should have to remove them from the catalogue without argument. We have no legal expertise here, and no money to pay for any ;).

As they are very, very short, perhaps amalgamating two or three under the title "Selections from The Gateless Gate" would be the best thing to do.
