The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, Volume 2 by Jefferson Davis (1808 - 1889).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-rise-and-fall-of-the-confederate-government-volume-2-by-jefferson-davis/
The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government (1881) is written by Jefferson Davis, former President of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Davis wrote the book as a straightforward history of the Confederate States of America and as an apologia for the causes that he believed led to and justified the American Civil War. (Intro modified from Wikipedia)

"The most painful pages of this work are those which . . . present the subjugation of the State governments by the Government of the United States. The patriot, the lover of his country and of the liberties of mankind, can not contemplate these facts without a feeling of grief which will not be comforted. That the work of the fathers of the republic, that the most magnificent system of constitutional government which the wisdom of man has devised, should be turned from its object, changed from its order, rendered powerless to protect the unalienable rights and sovereignty of the people, and made the instrument by which to establish and maintain imperialism, is a revolution unlike any other that may be found in the history of mankind. The result established the truthfulness of the assertion . . . that the Northern people, by their unconstitutional warfare to gain the freedom of certain negro slaves, would lose their own liberties." (from chapter 42)

This project contains the Volume 2 (of 2).
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/42315
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Hi, Patrick! I'll pencil you in for it.

How would you like to be credited in the catalog? There are places for a catalog name (some use a nickname or forum name, some their real name) and a personal web site or blog, if you have one. CLICK HERE for an example of what I'm talking about. I recommend using whatever name you say (if any) when you say, "recorded by [your name]" as that's how listeners will look for you. (Keep in mind that prospective employers, classmates, etc. can also find you using the catalog name, so be cautious if privacy might be an issue.)

You'll want to record and submit a short portion - a minute or so - to check your tech specs before recording the whole thing. It'd be a shame to record it all, only to have a problem with your setup that requires you to redo it. :? You can upload it to the "tests" folder and post the URL either in here or in the Listeners Wanted forum. More info is available in your welcome email, or if you don't have it, or here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test

Hi Tricia,

Just a couple of quick questions concerning Sections 1 and 2:

a) In Section 1 there is an in-text reference in parentheses, viz., (See "American State Papers," vol. iv, pp. 122, 123.). Should I ignore or include this in my reading?

b) And please confirm that I am to ignore all footnotes in these two sections and indeed other sections unless otherwise indicated.

Thanks,
Bruce.

Hmm. I think I'd include in-text references, simply because the author included them rather than footnoting them. But if you leave them out, I won't quibble. I'm pretty easygoing on them, either way. (I've already edited this post a couple times, changing my decision!)

Yes, ignore footnotes except as noted in the MW. Most of them are source references, and not interesting in an audiobook, IMHO. :)
