The Life of Samuel Johnson, Vol. I by James Boswell (1740 - 1795).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on the catalog page for this project: http://librivox.org/the-life-of-samuel-johnson-vol-i-by-james-boswell-version-2/
This is the first of four volumes of a what was a new, intimate, type of biography when it was first published in 1791 and which has been annotated by numerous editors . Boswell took many notes of Johnson's conversations during the time when he knew one of England's most influential men of letters and he also gives us frequent glimpses of other famous personalities who were part of Johnson's circle in eighteenth century London.

  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8918
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin
  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):

    • Say:
"The Life of Samuel Johnson, Vol. I, by James Boswell. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Life of Samuel Johnson, Vol. I by James Boswell. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Life of Samuel Johnson, Vol. I, by James Boswell. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.
  • Example filename samueljohnson1_##_boswell.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. samueljohnson1_01_boswell.mp3)

done!

i shortened your file name to samueljohnson1_xx_boswell, i hope thats ok. and in the intro and outro, it might be better to say "section" instead of chapter, as the text is not subdivided into chapters, but thats up to you :)

at the moment, you cant enter the magic window. i think there is a bug in the system and ill ask an admin with more permissions than me to take care of it, it shouldnt take very long...

have fun with this, im glad you like mr johnson and boswell and all the rest so much :)

edit: looks like it just took a few minutes for the system to update, so you have access now... :)

Great. And I'll be saying "Section".

Alas, my username and password are not accepted. I asked for an email to reset my password but haven't received it half an hour later. :(

Best,

congratulations on getting started!

some little things: the title column should be filled in. i added some example titles for you for the first two sections, but you can have a different format if you like.

also, the 128 at the file name should have an underscore (samueljohnson1_01_boswell_128kb.mp3)

otherwise, it looks like everything is going wonderfully :D

Hi,

Here are the PL note for chapter 1

@19:20 : stumble "I have not known many happy h...hours".

And the PL notes for chapter2 :

@38:49 : "[c]annot prevail on myself, etc". The "c" at beginning of "cannot" is cut off.

Good reading otherwise, especially considering the length of your files !
