William, An Englishman by Cicely Hamilton (1872 - 1952).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:
http://librivox.org/william-an-englishman-by-cicely-hamilton/

William – an Englishman is a 1919 novel by Cicely Hamilton. The novel explores the effect of the First World War on a married couple during the rise of Socialism and the Suffragette movement. It was originally published by Skeffington & Son before being reprinted by Persephone Books in 1999. Described as 'a passionate assertion of the futility of war' by The Spectator, William - an Englishman won the first Prix Femina-Vie Heureuse Anglais prize in 1920. ( Wikipedia)
Please note that the available edition is missing two pages (pages 169-170), and that these pages are therefore missing from the reading. The missing scene is when William Tully first meets the Englishwoman Edith Haynes in a French village.

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Expatriate. I'll MC this project for you. Magic Window (MW) will be up shortly. Since this is your first solo, you will need to get a password for the new Workflow system in order to edit the MW. Please see this document for instructions

Thanks, Jo. I'm a new volunteer, so having a little confusion with all the insider jargon you need to know for this project. But I'm figuring it out.

I'm ready to upload my first chapter. Let me know if I've done everything OK.

Looks like you are getting around the MW/Section Compiler pretty well for your first try. I just a couple of notes about the filenames.

You have an extra .mp3 in the filename. You don't need to add this to your filename when you export the mp3 in Audacity. The software will add the extension for you. Please do add the _128kb at the end of your filename (see example in the top post). I've renamed the file for chapter 1 on the server for you and updated the link in the MW for you.

When you paste a link for the file in the section compiler (or in the thread in a forum post), you need to copy and paste the entire url for the file from the uploader. So for this file, the url link is

http://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/williamanenglishman_01_hamilton_128kb.mp3

dedicated proof listener; just an extra set of ears to catch any mistakes. Dedicated means you agree to proof the entire book.

Thanks, DaveC...

Actually, though I'm impressed by what seems to be a systematic attempt to Proof Listen and Double Proof Listen, I'm really, really surprised to find out about it! I've listened to LibriVox recordings for a LONG time before I decided to volunteer (shame on me), and never had the impression or heard any evidence that anything I ever listened to here had been "Proof Listened" at all.

Maybe this is a new system? Maybe I've only listened to old, pre-Proof Listening things?

Just curious...

PL's should be invisible to the listener. Btw, I listened to Chapter 1, the introduction should have no more than 1s of silence and the ending (if over 30m) should have 10s of silence. Nice read and an interesting story.

Thanks for the corrections. Should I fix those and upload them again?

My comment about being surprised that there's Proof Listening was because there have always been lots of errors in what I listened to. Hence I wondered if it was a new system.

Glad it's here now. Thanks for your help. Let me know of any concerns.

Yes, upload the corrected files. Sorry to hear you've found errors. If you wish I'll PL the remainder of the book. The book description you wrote caught my interest.
