Mastery by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/mastery-by-sara-teasdale/
First published in The Bellman magazine, this poem was included in the Anthology of Magazine Verse, 1916.
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

This week's poem can be found here.

Please be sure that your recording software is set to the following technical specifications:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
If this is your first recording, you'll also find this useful: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Newbie_Guide_to_Recording

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
(Please leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!)
Mastery by Sara Teasdale, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
I would not have a god come in
To shield me suddenly from sin,
And set my house of life to rights;
Nor angels with bright burning wings
Ordering my earthly thoughts and things;
Rather my own frail guttering lights
Wind-blown and nearly beaten out,
Rather the terror of the nights
And long sick groping after doubt,
Rather be lost than let my soul
Slip vaguely from my own control —
Of my own spirit let me be
In sole though feeble mastery.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase: mastery_teasdale_your initials.mp3

ID3 tags (Version 2):
Artist Name: Sara Teasdale
Track Title: Mastery - Read by YOUR INITIALS (eg. Mastery - Read by KLH)
Album Title: LibriVox Weekly Poetry
Comments: (optional) Recorded by [your name]

Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
  • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:

Hi Ruth, it says:
(If you wish to contribute, please have your readings submitted by 0600 GMT Sunday, 28th April (12:00AM CDT)
That would have been a few hours ago. (I guess it's a copy&paste thing?)

Good. :)

I'll make the start then (I'm quite hooked on these poems, I think they're perfect for a newbie).

Thank you, Claudia. Another lovely recording. The volume was a bit low on this one, so I have amplified it by 4 dB and reuploaded.

You may in future wish to check your volume using our Checker program: see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker Make sure you download the experimental version - you will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB, and this recording measured about 85 dB.

Thank you, Ruth! I ran it through the checker program which told me
This file has passed all validation tests.
I'll make sure to check the information tab in the future.

Yes, it is a little limited in its messages, and passes not only rather low volume but ANY high volume . We're trying to get it changed. It's best to look at the Information tab, which gives the exact dB level. Anything between 87 and 91 is OK.
