Almayer's Folly by Joseph Conrad (1857 - 1924) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/almayers-folly-by-joseph-conrad-2/
A European businessman and his Malayan wife have a daughter, Nina. A Malayan prince comes to do trade with the businessman and falls in love with the daughter. Conflict arises when other influences cause distrust in the business partnership and the daughter runs off to be with the prince. (Summary by Kristel Tretter)
  • Target completion date: 2013-May-01
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/720
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

OK, I think you are set up. As a soloist, you are your own BC and are responsible for updating the magic window. I don't think you've done this before, have you? I will PM you your password.

Hey thanks, Sarah. Yes, my first solo. I'm looking forward to it. I'll read up on what I need to know for updating the MW. And, although I'm not picky, I have so few ties back to Ottawa that it'll be nice working with you. :)

Great to have you, Sharon. I plan to work on the first chapter in the next couple days, before I head to Malaysia this weekend. I'm hoping some of the locations in the book will inspire some future weekend travel destinations.

I'm just awaiting the file to upload and I'll post it in the MW. I know the first chapter is longer than the 10-40 min recommendation. I'm pretty sure, from the looks of it, that most of the other chapters are not quite as long. Let me know if it's a problem and I'll split it in 2. If any other chapters come up longer than this one, I'll definitely split it up.

Chapter 1---silence between intro and start of chapter alittle long.

:59--repeated phrase-"No matter there would be an end to it"
1:45-incorrect phrase"though his honest exertions" needs to be removed
2:45--"and return he" repeated
3:30-repeated "amongst which" twice
4:31--repeated "he envied that inanimate thing now"
4:47--repeated "would the current"
5:00--repeated phrase "South probably til it drifted in sight of Celebes as far as M perhaps"

The rest of the chapter was great. Just had a little trouble getting started. Your reading is very
good and I am enjoying it.

Off to a great start!

FYI only - You don't have to divide the section until it's 72 minutes long. Some listeners do burn our books to CD, so our max is what a CD will hold. Some readers choose to divide shorter sections - sometimes they don't like long sections, sometimes they want all sections to be similar in length, etc. Whatever the reader wants is generally fine as long as the sections are not ridiculously short.
