[COMPLETE] Short Science Fiction Collection 048- alg
Short Science Fiction Collection 048.
This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page:
http://librivox.org/short-science-fiction-collection-048-by-various/
This collection is for science fiction recordings of less than 70 minutes in duration
Collection Requirements:
• Source texts must be in the Public Domain, published prior to 1923 or with expired copyright. Any texts with expired copyright after 1923 must be from Gutenberg.org.
• Each recording must contain a complete story
• Claiming stories is unnecessary (duplicates are held for future collections)
• There is no deadline (when finished, post to the currently open collection)
For help with LibriVox requirements and policies see the Recording Notes topic
Finding Texts:
Stories found on the Project Gutenberg US site are cleared for recording
Gutenberg’s Science Fiction Bookshelf is a good starting point
Gutenberg’s science fiction content is not always cataloged as such (search by other criteria)
Gutenberg plain text, us-ascii, uncompressed files of less than 78 KB or 10,000 story words can generally be read in less than 70 minutes
The Librivox Main Page also contains pages listing Gutenberg stories appropriate to this collection:
The Science Fiction Short Stories Science Fiction Short Stories page shows stories that can be read in less than 60 minutes.
The Science Fiction Shortish Stories page shows longer stories that may be read in less than 60 minutes depending on your reading speed.
The LibriVox Short Science Fiction Index displays stories already in the LibriVox catalog (Note: duplicates welcome)
File Requirements:
• Recording must be a monaural MP3 file with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit rate of 128 Kbps.
• File name must be formatted entirely in lower case letters and use under-bars to separate values as in: ssf048_titleinoneword_authorlastname_readersinitials.mp3 (e.g. ssf048_nightfall_asimov_abc.mp3) – Exclude definite articles like “The” from the file name (e.g. grapesofwrath_steinbeck_abc.mp3)
• Recording must contain LibriVox announcements at beginning and end:
Beginning Announcement:
“[story title] by [author]. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name]".
Then repeat: "[Title], by [author]. Translated by [translator]."
Ending Announcement:
"End of [title], by [author] Translated by [translator]."
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
• Recordings of less than 30 minutes require 5 seconds of silence at the end of the file
• Recordings of more than 30 minutes require 10 seconds of silence at the end of the file
• All files must have ID3 V2 tags that populate the following 3 fields:
Title: [story title]
Artist: [author name] (trans. by [translator name])
Album: Librivox Short Sci-fi Story Collection, vol. 048
For help with ID3 V2 tags see the What is ID3 page of the LibriVox wiki.

PL notes on Vital Ingredient. A neat story and well read! Please make the following corrections, upload again and make a reply in this thread that you have done so. If you have any questions I will be glad to help.
1) please insert the name of story and author after your name in the beginning (the first post says to do this).
2) Your volume is too high at 95 dB. I suggest that you run the Compressor effect if you are using Audacity. This reduces the loud spikes without touching those of normal volume. If you're not sure about this I will be glad to make a little video showing you how to do this. Just say the word!
3) 3:21 stumble "motions"
6:08 pop should be removed
7:44 noise
8:13 stumble "as it's..."
9:07 stumble "the-his.."
13:24 stumble 'striking .. "(I think)
13:59 stumble "to be able"

This story was written in 1957, but it is on Gutenberg, and says the US copyright has expired... so I hope it is acceptable

Hi Lynne,
Yes. I know it seems strange, but they are PD. I don't think we have this one in the catalog yet.
Thanks for your story!

Story 3 Lighter Than You Think PL OK !! Very nice recording.
"Vital Ingredient" corrected and re-uploaded.
I like the USB headset I got -- especially for $20, but for some reason, Audacity doesn't offer control on the microphone gain and it's a bit "hot". I'll try moving it farther away next time and see how that works.
As for overall levels, I'm curious why all the sections of a book or collection aren't normalized at the same time.

Audacity has an "Input Volume Slider" to adjust the gain going in from your mic. Drop it down a bit. I have mine set at .8. Also be sure that Audacity recognizes the mic you are using. As for Normalization, that would just increase the volume on everything to max possible (I think) and we don't really want that; files from different people vary quite a lot and it would hurt them to amplify so much. We try to keep volume at a 89 dB for everyone to have a nice starting base. Well ... we try.whinsch wrote:"Vital Ingredient" corrected and re-uploaded.

Hi, here is an odd and (perhaps) a bit funny story by Arthur Porges: called "The Unwilling Professor":
http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/alg/ssf048_unwillingprofessor_porges_lr.mp3
Time: 19:00
Text from Dynamic Science Fiction January 1954 can be found her:
