Dibdin’s Ghost by Eugene Field , read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
DEAR wife, last midnight, whilst I read
The tomes you so despise,
A spectre rose beside the bed,
And spake in this true wise:
“From Canaan’s beatific coast
I ’ve come to visit thee,
For I am Frognall Dibdin’s ghost,”
Says Dibdin’s ghost to me.

I bade him welcome, and we twain
Discussed with buoyant hearts
The various things that appertain
To bibliomaniac arts.
“Since you are fresh from t’other side,
Pray tell me of that host
That treasured books before they died,”
Says I to Dibdin’s ghost.

“They ’ve entered into perfect rest;
For in the life they ’ve won
There are no auctions to molest,
No creditors to dun.
Their heavenly rapture has no bounds
Beside that jasper sea;
It is a joy unknown to Lowndes,”
Says Dibdin’s ghost to me.

Much I rejoiced to hear him speak
Of biblio-bliss above,
For I am one of those who seek
What bibliomaniacs love.
“But tell me, for I long to hear
What doth concern me most,
Are wives admitted to that sphere?”
Says I to Dibdin’s ghost.

“The women folk are few up there;
For ’t were not fair, you know,
That they our heavenly joy should share
Who vex us here below.
The few are those who have been kind
To husbands such as we;
They knew our fads, and did n’t mind,”
Says Dibdin’s ghost to me.

“But what of those who scold at us
When we would read in bed?
Or, wanting victuals, make a fuss
If we buy books instead?
And what of those who ’ve dusted not
Our motley pride and boast,—
Shall they profane that sacred spot?”
Says I to Dibdin’s ghost.

“Oh, no! they tread that other path,
Which leads where torments roll,
And worms, yes, bookworms, vent their wrath
Upon the guilty soul.
Untouched of bibliomaniac grace,
That saveth such as we,
They wallow in that dreadful place,”
Says Dibdin’s ghost to me.

“To my dear wife will I recite
What things I ’ve heard you say;
She ’ll let me read the books by night
She ’s let me buy by day.
For we together by and by
Would join that heavenly host;
She ’s earned a rest as well as I,”
Says I to Dibdin’s ghost.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Here's Frognall Dibdin, to save googling. Enthusiastic bibliographer apparently, if you can imagine such a thing. :P

I used a gentle echo on the ghost, hope that doesn't offend against the guidelines. :D

Okay, let me just say that this wreaked havoc with my dyslexia. I think I scrapped at least four recordings before I got one that I could simply edit, so I fully expect to have some PL notes on this one. :wink: In the immortal words of Mr. T, "I pity the [PLer]" who by no means will be foolish, but may be a bit tired by the end of this recording. :D Let me say, too, that I am excessively thankful for the fact that while there were a great many d's and b's in close succession at least there weren't p's and q's and g's to contend with. :D lol! I don't think I have heard my (8-year-old) daughter laugh that hard in while (than while she listened to me record and re-record and well, you get the point).

Well, what is it that they say...challenges keep us young or something like that, right? lol!

Anyway, it was very cute (if somewhat misogynistic) poem. :wink:

Thank you Jason, nice 'ghost' effect :thumbs:

Caprisha, that was a joy to listen to, no 'PL pity' here. :D (I'm glad your daughter enjoyed herself) :wink:

Lol! Whew! Well, I am glad it worked out. She is a character, but my best critic (in a good way) - no one is as honest as a child. :o) :wink:

Good reading highlandoaks, but the volume is to low (76.3 dB) it should be 89 *. In crease the volume by 12 dB and you may have to do noise reduction on the amplified background noise (if any) :wink:
There should also be 0.5 to 1 second of opening silence.
The ID3 Tags are not complete, what program are you using to enter the ID tags ? Some programs do not enter them correctly. Your tags are an older version ID3v1.0.0; ID3v2.30 is the current tag version.

* You should aim for your wave forms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:

They are listed in the opening post. :wink:
eta... if you are using Audacity, you may be using an older version of lame (which renders the mp3 files).
