The Village Coquettes by Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-village-coquettes-by-charles-dickens/
Before he started writing novels, Charles Dickens tried his hand at theater. The Village Coquettes is a two act musical. Sadly the music was lost long ago so this will be a spoken version.

This play completes the recording of the relatively unknown plays of Dickens in celebration of his 200th birthday! (Summary by ToddHW)

Gender mis-match is fine for parts!
  1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 31 December 2012.
  2. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a role to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which role you’d like to read. Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.

    SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
If it says you sing - just read as if a poem - music was lost many years ago.
Some lines start with quote marks cuz they weren't in the first performance. Still read them, please.
EVERYBODY (except Narrator) read - never sing - the following so I can pick and choose and mix together
. The ROUND in Act 1 Scene 1
    . Villagers "Hurrah"s in Act 1 Scene 1
. The last 4 lines of the "song" by Squire Norton at end of Act 1 Scene 1
. The chorus to Squire "song" at very end of Act 1
. The lines for Villagers in Act 2 Scene 4
. The lines for "Several Voices" and "All" in the last scene of Act 2
. The words to the "Dance and Finale" at the end of Act 2
. The Chorus at the very end of Act 2

Just mix these extra lines in with your character lines in the same file for the appropriate Act.
  3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://openlibrary.org/books/OL14034623M/The_plays_and_poems_of_Charles_Dickens
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

I'm so excited to see this posted! :D I'll happily take Lucy or Rose, Todd, whichever you think I'd be better for.

Oops - what are the odds? Thanks, Tricia! OK, this project is all set up. Todd, I'd be happy to read a small role of either gender - I'll leave it up to you. :)

Okay all of you: I WILL NOT cast. Pick something!!

And by the way, I'm not worried about gender mis-match.

Thanks, Todd

If you're okay with me reading a male role, I'd love to read Sparkins Flam. :)

Todd, for the "everyone except Narrator please read" bits in the first post, do you want those as a separate file? Or mixed in with our character's lines? Happy to do whatever works best for you as editor.

Just mix them with your lines in the same file for the appropriate Act. I'll add this to the first post.

Thanks, Todd
