I'm a novice here, but after reviewing the instructions, watching your illuminating videos, having my test (finally) accepted and experimenting with the weekly poetry, I feel I may be ready to take the plunge. I would like to claim chapter 5, The Self Steering Pens, if I may.

So glad to have you with us Lynne ! If you have watched my videos, then what could possibly go wrong, eh?

You are welcome to record chapter 5. I feel this is just the start of an illustrious recording career with LibriVox.

and of course ask as many questins as you wish.

Hi,

I have PLed chapter 5.

There are a few things to correct :

@2:19 : you seem to have edited out something there, but there still remains a trace of the former recording which needs to be cut out.
@7:53 : stumble "under the f... face of a very curiously carved clock" (p.51)
@8:15 : stumble "'One o'clock, two o'clock, off and away,'qu...quoted alice" (p.51)

Also, the volume is a bit too low (84.6dB), you will need to amplify it a bit. We generally aim for something around 89~90dB. If you don't know how to do that, you just need to open the file in Audacity, go to "Effects" and choose "Amplify".

But on the whole Lynne you seem to have quite mastered the whole editing process, and your recording is great apart from the (tiny !) details mentioned above.

Thank you for your feedback and encouragement. I will look at those fixes, but I do have a question about amplification... I was following Phil's (obviously excellent!) Video on editing, and when he covered amplification, he had an "ok" button.... mine was not highlighted so I couldn't click on it. I thought (obviously incorrectly!) that this meant I couldn't amplify as some parts were already loud ... such as "dong, dong, dong". Can I go in and amplify around the loud parts?

Hi Lynne. Those "obviously excellent" videos are not so excellent in places. In fact I am redoing a number that need it badly. The OK button is one of the things that needs to be covered because it will not be available if there is a clip anywhere on the track; it will be greyed out. This means that if anywhere in the track, there is one wave form that hits the top and/or bottom, it won't allow you to amplify. So the first thing is to reduce any spikes where the volume is too high either manally or using Compression (see video

), then try to amplify.

Hi,

The editing is perfect, but your volume is just a tiny bit low. MP3 gain shows 86.8dB, so you still need 3dBs to meet librivox's requirements.
I generally don't bother with the loud parts and just amplify the whole recording. If the loudest parts are too loud, I deamplify them afterwards.

I am tweaking the sound, deamplifying peaks so I can amplify the whole thing... but how do I check the 89 decibell level? Does that mean in the amplify window, I am looking for +3? Sorry to be such an ignoramus on this
