Essays in Radical Empiricism by William James.
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the blue number, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
Target completion date of this project: March 2007 – but try to send your recordings as soon as you can. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen.
  4. Where do I find the text?

See links in magic window, below...
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!

I want to claim chapter 8.

I should probably explain that I'm hoping to have this chapter recorded twice, once in English and once in French. I'm hoping that a native French speaker will volunteer.

So chapter 8 is here

http://www.librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/TheNotionofConsciousness

and the final chapter is here:

http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/James/James_1912/James_1912_08.html

Note for the person who does the French version

"qu'elles sont rapportées à d'autres parties et queR" in section 224

should read

"qu'elles sont rapportées à d'autres parties et sues"

Thanks to Kristin for working this out for me.

You did this wonderfully right! Thanks, Carl. This will make for smooth project entering and an MC will do so shortly. :) This looks like an interesting project!

Just one question: did you calculate the duplicate chapter 8 as two sections? I'm sure you'll have no problems finding a French speaker to record it - try posting a request in one of the French projects we have going in this forum. :)

Hi Gesine,

Just for clarity, there will be 15 sections as follows:

00. http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/James/James_1912/James_1912_pref.html

01. http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/James/James_1912/James_1912_01.html

02. http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/James/James_1912/James_1912_02.html

03. http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/James/James_1912/James_1912_03.html

04. http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/James/James_1912/James_1912_04.html

13. http://www.uoguelph.ca/~abailey/4270%20-%20Pragmatism/James%20and%20Russell.pdf

14. http://spartan.ac.brocku.ca/~lward/James/James_1912/James_1912_08.html

Chapter 13 is included only in some editions of the book, but not in the online version, so I've found a PDF from elsewhere. It's in the form of an exchange of letters, so it might be nice to get two voices on this - I'd be happy to do the necessary editing.

Chapter 14 is the original French version of chapter 8, which I hope will be included as a sort of appendix.

Thanks,
Carl.

I'd love to contribute to the project.

I'll take chapter 1, or whichever, really. I suppose I should take the chapter that's filled with the most philosophical jargon.

Carl, how about this: sign me up for something or other? Chapter 1, if you don't have some other idea.

You're most definitely on.

The new system means I have to wait until a sort of window with all the chapters appears in the first post before I can allocate, but after that, just try and stop me.

Looks good. I do have a couple questions. Is the summary yours? Where did you find chapter 13? (I just need to double check it as it is from a different source.)

Is this really in the public domain? The edition on the website seems to be from 1996? I know the original is from 1912, but can we use this version?

Kristin,

Yes, the summary is by me.

Chapter 13 is from the University of Guelph website (this is in Canada). if you're concerned about PD issues, you can see from the PDF that it was originally published 23rd May 1907.

If you're thinking about whether it really is or isn't part of the book, it doesn't seem to have been introduced until a Harvard edition of the 1970s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essays_in_Radical_Empiricism#Perry.27s_1912_book , but I think the more the merrier.

With this addition and, hopefully, the bilingual versions of chapter 8, we could maybe even call it Essays in Radical Empiricism - Deluxe Edition.

Thanks,
Carl.

Gesine,

I think we're okay with this, since the date of it makes it public domain.

Something called the Mead Project has put a copyright notice on in, but what can they legitimately be claiming to be their intellectual property? It would be a pretty lucrative business opportunity if people were allowed to post PD texts on the internet, slap a © on there and reclaim the works from the public domain.

If it's felt necessary, I could try contacting them to see if they have a different view.

Cheers,
Carl.

If they do any editing, they may be able to claim rights over the edited version. I'm fairly certain this does not include mere digitizing, but would have to involve some non-mere-sweat-of-the-brow labour, at least according to my interpretation of the law, but the conservative reading seems to tend more towards Lockean rather than utilitarian intuitions regarding the establishment of property rights, so this may not be a good time to be pressing the issue in the US.

Oh, wait.
The hypertext version is copyrighted and represents an official communication of The Mead Project.
And yet they claim control over recorded versions, which seems indefensible, if their claim is regarding hypertext format qua copyrightable editorial expressive work.

Bah. I doubt this would stand up to a challenge, but that doesn't matter. Just having a case filed is trouble enough.
