Hello Iris,
Did you amplify the recording?
Your background noise is very high. Normally it's possible to digitally clean it, but my software (which is not audacity) doesn't let me in your case.
So if you indeed amplified your recording, please try to rerecord. You should be able to increase the volume at recording. Here are the instructions: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Audacity_1-2-3#Volume
When you didn't ampify the recording, you can try to noise clean your recording with Audacity. Here is how you do that: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noisecleaning_With_Pics

The rest of the technical stuff is fine now, so the noise cleaning is the only thing problem to address.

Bart,

I may was well DPL this one. That will help me keep track of what I need to listen to.

I've lost my log-in details for the MW. Can you PM them to me (or ask whoever in the team does these things)?

Many thanks!

Bart,

Sit down and get a coffee… This will take a while. :?

1 224 Deer-park Hermitage (Mandarin) GDCVC PL - OK Listen PL OK
- Poor quality recording, heavy-handed noise cleaning.
- I've taken a better recording by GDCVC (Nora) from her file of 228 and uploaded it here:- https://librivox.org/uploads/bart/300tangpoems5_224_1mb.mp3 (I added a 'b' to the filename so as not to over-write the one that's there)

5 225 In a Retreat Among Bamboos (Mandarin) anoldcrow 300tangpoems5_225_1m.mp3 Listen Ready for spot PL
- This is a 10-minute file by GDCVC (Nora) - not 'anoldcrow' - of several poems and long silences, unedited, with very heavy-handed noise cleaning. Not usable at all. Please delete it.
- I've taken a better recording by GDCVC (Nora) from her file of 228 and uploaded it here:- https://librivox.org/uploads/bart/300tangpoems5_225_1mb.mp3 (I added a 'b' to the filename so as not to over-write the one that's there)

9 226 A Parting (Mandarin) anoldcrow PL - OK Listen PL OK
- Again, completely the wrong file and from GDCVC (Nora) - not 'anoldcrow' . Starts with poem 224, hideous noise cleaning, several poems in a 5-minute file. Please delete it.
- I've taken a better recording by GDCVC (Nora) from her file of 228 and uploaded it here:- https://librivox.org/uploads/bart/300tangpoems5_226_1mb.mp3 (I added a 'b' to the filename so as not to over-write the one that's there)

13 227 One-hearted (Mandarin) Open
GDCVC (Nora) has recorded this one, within the file for 228. I've extracted it and uploaded it:-
https://librivox.org/uploads/bart/300tangpoems5_227_1m.mp3

17 228 Lines (Mandarin) anoldcrow 300tangpoems5_228_1m.mp3 Listen Ready for PL
A long file by GDCVC (Nora) - not 'anoldcrow' - with re-recorded versions of several poems, which I've edited and used…
I've uploaded 228 again, adding 'b' to the file name to differentiate it:-
https://librivox.org/uploads/bart/300tangpoems5_228_1mb.mp3

21 229 A Farewell to Cui (Mandarin) anoldcrow 300tangpoems5_229_1m.mp3 Listen Ready for PL
Another long file by GDCVC (Nora) - not 'anoldcrow' - of several poems, hideous noise reduction.
GDCVC (Nora) has recorded this one, within the file for 228. I've extracted it and uploaded it, with a 'b' to differentiate it:-
https://librivox.org/uploads/bart/300tangpoems5_229_1mb.mp3

25 230 On Seeing the Snow-peak of Zhongnan (Mandarin) anoldcrow 300tangpoems5_230_1m.mp3 Listen Ready for PL

Bart
I tried that, but the database must have my old (defunct) email address, so I didn't get the password email. (I've changed my email address in the account settings, and I get forum notifications to that, but presumably the database is separate).

I think I've got it. To be sure I will not delete any file just yet.

I will catalogue this project when all poems are done in Mandarin, regardless of what the other versions do.

Hi Iris.
You're almost there. The recording itself is now usable, but it's still too soft. It has to be amplified by 12 dB to be on the correct level. But now you can amplify it in Audacity, without problems with background noise.
I think you are ready to do your first poem.

Hi Bart,

Thanks. Would you like another test? I am not sure what else to do and what the trick is to get the voice louder. The input volume is already at the highest level.

Thanks, Iris

We can use your first recording as your final test.
Somewhere in Audacity (I don't use it, so I don't know where you'll have to look for it) you'll find an amplify function. just take a look.

Every poem has five entries, all meant for different versions of Chinese. What version do you use?
If it's Mandarin, you can choose for sections 41, 45, 53, 57, 61, 65 and so on.
