Section 09 is PL OK. I don't think it is necessary to edit this one, but for future recordings I think it is helpful to note where footnotes end by saying "end footnote."

This isn't the wrong place to sign up for chapters, but before you record the section, it would be great if you could upload a one minute test. wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test

Hi, I'm a first-time reader, and would like to take a shot at recording Section 18, "The Balance of Power". I submitted a test earlier: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/tests/test_RWestmoreland.mp3. Do I just check back here to see if my name has appeared next to the section in the Magic Window?

Also, my name can appear in the catalog as my username (RWestmoreland). Thanks much!

Welcome to Librivox, Richard :)

All of the tech specs are correct for your recording are correct, but there is some background noise. This can be fixed using the noise removal effect. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noise_Cleaning

Please upload a new test after noise cleaning, and post the link in this thread :)

I'll add you to the MW, but please wait to have your new test okayed before you start recording.

Ack! I do apologize -- I didn't see your intervening message, but only noticed that my name had been assigned to the section.

I did an Audacity cleaning, and indeed see what you mean! The results are much improved.

So hopefully I've killed two birds with one stone, by uploading both a "test" of the cleaned first minute and the cleaned entire file. I hope they're both useable.

Complete file URL for Section 18: http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ek/lincolnhistoryvol1_18_haynicolay.mp3

Sorry for the mix-up!

Hi Richard,

Unfortunately the recording is about 13dB to quiet. I've had a fiddle around with the file in audacity, and have been able to make it usable :D I think the best the thing we can do is use the file as I have it now and then work on getting your test recordings correct. I'll send you a PM so that this thread is kept clear :)

PL Notes, Section 18:

8:07: "the greed of pain" should be "the greed of gain"
14:38 "rising steam" should be "rising stream"
20:46 "June 5th, 1836" should be "June 15th, 1836"

If it's okay, I'll go ahead and finish off 19 and 21 as well.
