For Dolly, who does not Learn her Lessons by E. Nesbit (1858 - 1924) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/for-dolly-who-does-not-learn-her-lessons-by-e-nesbit/
How much more relevant is this today, when childhood seems to be even shorter?
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

This week's poem can be found here.

Please be sure that your recording software is set to the following technical specifications:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44100 kHz

Have questions on "how"?
Check LV's Recording Notes thread before recording: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430
If this is your first recording, you'll also find this useful: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Newbie_Guide_to_Recording

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
(Please leave no more than 0.5-1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!)
For Dolly, who does not Learn her Lessons by E. Nesbit, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
You see the fairies dancing in the fountain,
Laughing, leaping, sparkling with the spray;
You see the gnomes, at work beneath the mountain,
Make gold and silver and diamonds every day;
You see the angels, sliding down the moonbeams,
Bring white dreams like sheaves of lilies fair;
You see the imps, scarce seen against the moonbeams,
Rise from the bonfire’s blue and liquid air.

All the enchantment, all the magic there is
Hid in trees and blossoms, to you is plain and true.
Dewdrops in lupin leaves are jewels for the fairies;
Every flower that blows is a miracle for you.
Air, earth, water, fire, spread their splendid wares for you.
Millions of magics beseech your little looks;
Every soul your winged soul meets, loves you and cares for you.
Ah! why must we clip those wings and dim those eyes with books?

Soon, soon enough the magic lights grow dimmer,
Marsh mists arise to cloud the radiant sky,
Dust of hard highways will veil the starry glimmer,
Tired hands will lay the folded magic by.
Storm winds will blow through those enchanted closes,
Fairies be crushed where weed and briar grow strong . . .
Leave her her crown of magic stars and roses,
Leave her her kingdom—she will not keep it long!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase: dolly_nesbit_your initials.mp3

ID3 tags (Version 2):
Artist Name: E. Nesbit
Track Title: For Dolly, who does not Learn her Lessons - Read by YOUR INITIALS (eg. Mis' Smith - Read by KLH)
Album Title: LibriVox Weekly Poetry
Comments: (optional) Recorded by [your name]

I found this insipid. :evil: So I decided to impose my own meaning on it and read it in the voice of orphan Dolly's Cruel Guardian, heh heh! :twisted:

Halle Kill
I'm going to be away from LV for a while. I have had some serious family things come up and LV is to much at the moment.

Thank you, Jason and Halle.

Halle, beware of including a leading space in your filename. This causes problems on the server. I have replaced it with http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/rg/dolly_nesbit_hk.mp3

Lovely poem. Was I ever that young? :D

I have young kids, so if the imagery sometimes tips to overly precious at times, it still resonates with me--especially after we are at odds over doing homework. :)

Brought back childhood memories of wandering in the garden, hoping to find gnomes under the toadstools and fairies in the daffodils!

I loved this poem. It reminded me of the stories I would read to my nieces and nephew...and of course what Mom read to me.

Hi! Would you like me to PL the sections that are currently done? I can DPL the project if you would like!

Thank you, Frances. I prefer to PL the weekly poetry myself though, as there are often new readers who may need some technical advice on their recordings :).

Kathy: Lovely reading. The volume was much too low, so I have amplified it considerably and re-uploaded. No need to do anything else for this one, but for future recordings, please try increasing the input volume in your computer's control panel. Instructions for Windows 7: click Start | Control Panel | Hardware and Sounds | Sounds | Manage Audio Devices | Recording | Microphone | Properties | Levels, where you will find a slider control for the mic. If you are using another operating system, there should be something similar.

You can check your own volume with our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker Make sure you download the experimental version - you will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB, and your current test measures about 77.6 dB.

Also, how would you like to be credited in the catalogue? This can be your real name, forum name or a pseudonym. Usually it's best to use whichever name you used in the recording for "Read by..." as this is how listeners will search for you. We can also link to a personal web page if you wish. :)

Here is your personal catalogue page: https://catalog.librivox.org/people_public.php?peopleid=8324 It is useful to keep track of your achievements, and the sections you have claimed. You can access it by right-clicking your name in the Magic Window and opening in a new tab. Many people also bookmark/favorite the page in their browser.

Anita:Thank you, lovely reading. PL OK

Halle: PL OK, but it sounds as if you have cut out all the spaces in the speech. Did you chop out all the breaths? It is natural to breathe, you know ;). If they bother you, try using Effect | Amplify with a minus number to make them quieter.

Jason: :twisted: That's what I like about Weekly Poetry. PL OK.

Jannie: Super :). E. Nesbit would approve. PL OK.

Lee Ann: Lovely reading, thank you. PL OK.

Marisel: Lovely and wistful:). I liked it a lot. Watch out for the air on the mic - it might be worth experimenting with the mic position a little :). PL OK.

I had trouble figuring this one out because the slider bar was all the way up to max. But there was a second slider bar that I just slid to the max. However, initially it didn't make that much difference. BUT, in the process of testing I discovered that with my hand held mic, if I tilted it and spoke into the mic from the side, and very close, it worked very well without the plosive sounds being distorted. I am expecting a new desktop mic today, so will be doing another 1 minute test to be sure I have it set up correctly.

How do I update my information for the catalog? I would prefer to have it reflect my name Kathy Wright, but I do not see anywhere to establish that.

No, your catalogue name has to be entered directly into the database, so that's something that you can't do yourself. I have done it now, and you can see it on your catalogue page: https://catalog.librivox.org/people_public.php?peopleid=8324

Yes, please do another test with your new mic. Getting the volume right to start with makes it easier for you :).
