Morlock wrote:After the title of chapter one it reads:

[Illustration: Musical Notation]

Then in chapter three it reads:

Smiling, Rose began one of the simple melodies that Aunt Francesca loved:

[Illustration: musical notation]

Suddenly, she turned away from the piano. Her elbow, falling upon the keys, made a harsh dissonance. "Isabel, my dear!" she cried. "Aren't you almost too gorgeous?"

So it seems to be describing a missing illustration, except in this case I'd guess it's sheet music.
They seem to be illustration captions. If so we almost always skip them. Use your judgment about whether they are part of the narrative or not.

the reading is spotless, the only thing i need to comment on is the volume -- thats at 82 db, while we aim at 89 db. would you please amplify a little?

I am going to be traveling until March 23 and will probably not have any access to the internet. So please understand if I don't answer any questions. But I want the both of you to be very productive while I'm gone, OK? And Carolin can probably handle any questions (right Carolin?) :D

Thank you both for the updates! The cheerfulness is SO helpful for me and I'm happy to hear my db was merely too low. I'll have to go over it and get back to you to see what options Audacity gives me. My machine is newer so these are differently handled than most of my previous project.

Have a good time, Phil!

Oh thank you for the links! Sorry I haven't been back in a while, things have been busy and got scary news. I'm hoping some reading can calm me down.

I tried a newer chapter but those Crosby Twins are a challenge to decide how they sound.

Just letting you know I'm still here.

Okay, so I finished the Crosby Twins and when I tried to normalize at 89 db everything just became one flat line, so I didn't save it like that at all. And now audacity is not back at the standard it used to normalise at. Arg!

So i went to my old computer to see what the standard was that worked before and use that. I should be uploading that soon.

I'm going to stick my oar in here. You can't tell it to normalize at 89 db; it will give you a flat line just like you got because it is trying to reduce (notice the - sign) everything to -89db which is inaudable.

If you have DC offset then I suggest running normalize but not checking the second box "Normalize maximum amplitude to 0db. " After the DC offset has been corrected, then you can decide for yourself how much to amplify the file using "Amplify".

Ain't this fun? :D

Thank you Morlock. When you put the link in the Magic window, please add the length of the recording and put "PL Needed".

By the way, 89db is the figure we use to approximate the volume we aim at. But trying to nail down what that actually means is slippery indeed.! The only tool I know of that actually gives me a measure like this is MP3Gain. MP3Gain calculates the volume in terms of what it sounds like to human ears.

Anyway, thanks for the upload and we look forward to many more, eh?
