  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you'd like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 10 Nov 2012 .

Hi Carl,

Have we got a mechanism for reading footnotes or are we ignoring them?

Thanks,

Sachin

Should there be some indication that this is volume 1, Carl?

Just a few more questions

1. Can we have a word perfect recording or do you think that is too much?
2. There are pages before the preface and I wonder if we are to read any of these:
a) The first page of writing says "The Sikh Religion Macauliffe"
b) The page that says "Henry Frowde, M. A. ..."
c) The two pages before the preface, the one which has the quote "The egg of superstition hath burst ...", the other "Oxford printed at the Clarendon press ..."
3. On page viii of the preface there is a quote in Gurmukhi (elsewhere there are quotes in Greek and Hindi) which I cannot read so I assume we can skip any non-English words.
4. Page xxvi of the preface says "... causes sh to be printed ś, ç or Ṣ; j, g; ch, k &c." I assume we say "sh" as "ess haych" and ç as c cedilla etc.
5. I assume we won't be reading the list of illustrations page between the preface and introduction.

1) I think it would be better not to have word-perfect, because it will be harder to get PL-ers. But if you really think we should, then we can.

2) You could read the page opposite the five portraits at the beginning of section 0, if you want to.

3) I think this may depend on a case-by-case basis. In each case, how much damage is done by skipping the words. In some cases, there might be no realistic alternative. But for Greek and possibly also Hindi, it might be possible to get someone to record that bit for you to cut and paste in. You would need to go to the Help Wanted board.

4) Yes.

5) If you want to. I don't think it would be the end of the world not to, though.

At this stage, I haven't wordcounted anything. It is possible that some of the chapters will need to be split into sections. We'll see how things go with the preface.

Cheers,
Carl.

I would really like to help record this book. But the magic window needs some work. As it is, the sections are too long for me to claim.

The first section, the Introduction, actually covers 88 pages of text through 7 chapters. It really needs to be divided up. The same is true of all other sections - the whole of this book is about 480 pages.

What do you say Carl? Can we split it up a bit more? I must admit I totally gave up on this project (I haven't even started) because I was hoping for some help. If I know I have someone else helping me like Joe has kindly offered then I will get it done in no time. Can we split up the sections a bit and then do this. Thanks for the help Joe.

Glad to see you are still here, sachin! I thought you might have abandoned this thing, and I was thinking of taking over your orphaned section(s). But it is impossible to record this book according to the layout in the magic window. Librivox has a limit of no more than 75 minutes per recording - but I like to try to keep them under 30 minutes each. That means about roughly 10 pages per section. As they are, these sections are impossibly long. I PMed Carl about a week ago but no reply - I don't know if he is still around!

To be honest I had abandoned it - well at least for now. You've given me a new impetus and at the same time put the entire Sikh community to shame. I asked if anyone wanted to take this up on a Sikh forum and no one was interested. Anyway, glad someone is. If I've got your support then I'll defintely finish this soon. If Carl does not come back to us soon about this, would you be able to lead this project?

sachin, I first want to see if Carl is still interested in properly dividing these sections up, since it was he who initiated this book project. I don't want to get in the habit of hijacking other people's projects!

In the meantime, do not be too hard on your Sikh community! Recording and editing these books, especially editing, take up a significant amount of leisure time, and I am fully aware that not everybody is willing to devote that kind of time for a new hobby. :D
