Summa Theologica - 04 Pars Prima, On Man. [Translated by the Fathers of the English Dominican Province]
The Summa Theologica (or the Summa Theologiae or simply the Summa, written 1265–1274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225–1274) although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners as a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of that time. It summarizes the reasonings for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa's topics follow a cycle: the existence of God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God.(Summary adapted from the Wikipedia)

This is part five of six parts of the Pars Prima, consisting of the Treatise on Man.
This work has several references to other works, appearing in the form of abbreviations. Please check the second post below or click HERE for instructions on how to read them. Thanks!
  1. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you’d like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 07 January 2014.
  4. Where do I find the text?
Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17611
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)!
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please, do not read the Editor's footnotes.

Abbreviations used in the Summa Theologica Pars Prima

Here is a list of the abbreviations used in the Summa. Please read all the abbreviations where they appear. Most of them are indications of books, followed by numbers, Roman or Arabic, indicating chapters or other subsections of those books; please read the meaning of the abbreviation (look it up on the list below) and just the plain numbers. For example:

(De Trin. x, 1,2).

should be read “On the Trinity, ten, one and two”

The Q. and A. are references to the Summa itself, the questions and articles. So, for example:

(Q. 59, A. 3).

Should be read “question fifty-nine, article three”.

If you have doubts, or if you happen to find an abbreviation I haven't listed, please post in the thread before recording, I will be glad to help!

Thank you! :)

I'd love to do Sections 1, 2 and 3 (so that I can keep body and soul together :) ).

But I can't possibly complete by the suggested completion date - January 7th 2012

Thanks for setting up this project.

Cheers

Query - with quotation marks in the text, do we say anything like "Start quote" or "end quote"?

And I note in some parts of this text of the Summa, there are Editor's notes inserted into the text, in parentheses. Are we to read these, and if so, how do we signal it is an editorial comment?

Cheers

Hello, Robin! And thanks for claiming!

As to the quotations, you can say "start quote" and "end quote", that's fine.

As to the editor's notes, there is no need to read them. Thanks for reminding me of them! I will add that to the first post.

Happy recording! :)

Edit: and oops with the target date - that's now fixed!

Hello, Kin, and welcome to the project

I have assigned you section 04. I see you have already done the test; all that's left for me to ask is the name or pseudonym you'd like me to add to your catalog page. :)

Best,
Leni

Thanks, Leni.

titankin77 would be fine as my pseudonym on the catalog page. Can you tell me where I can find that? Is that my personal page?

I'll have the recording sent to you very soon.
