Lynn,
Kirk, I am pretty clueless wrt recording, what is a pop filter?
It's like a screen that goes in front of the mic that helps filter out plosives. Here's what one looks like: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MASSB/

You can do a home-made one with at hanger and nylon stocking too, or whatever you can think of...it just slows down the air and pop filter isn't a cure-all either. Becoming conscience of which constants cause plosives can help you control them too.

Hello lolls,
thanks for the chapter. Can you tell us it's duration? I also see a mistake in your filename. It should be fentonsquest_07 and not fentonsquest_7. But that can be fix by our mc. So please don't reupload, unless the proof listener finds mistakes in your recording which you'll have to fix.

LOLLS

SECTION 7:

thanks for uploading this section and posting it in this thread is the right place.
i'm the proof listener who listens to all the recordings.
I tried to listen to your recording but it was too quiet for me too hear properly on my PC speakers, although what i could catch on the first minute or two before i gave up sounded good.

Could you try to make your recording louder then upload it again. i don't know if your familiar with editing or what programme you use. but it should have a option to do this without recording the whole thing again, audacity defenatly does.
I'm not too sure how to do this, if you need help post on this thread and i'm sure someone can advise you.
but you should defentaly NOT have to record it again

i look forward to listening to it :D

Lolls,

If you're using Audacity try this:

Select the track > Effect > Leveller > Heavier or Heaviest ( leave the "Threshold for Noise" box at 70db > Preview or Okay

Now play the track and check to make sure the meter is registering between 12 and 6 which will be the volume you're looking for. If it needs boosted more repeat the above steps until it's loud enough. If it's too loud select Edit > Undo Leveller then follow the above steps using less Levelling.

You won't damage the existing file unless you Export over it. If you can't finish fixing it one setting just save it under another name then when you have it the way you want Export over it.

Finally, if you still have problems you can email the file at kirk@voicersbykirk.com and I'll see if I can fix it for you.

Hope this helps.

Here is Section 13, Chapter 13. 20:17

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/lz/fentonsquest_13_braddon.mp3

My first try at editing out background noise....with the microphone in the best location for avoiding pops, there was a distinct hum. Is there any way to select the whole track, rather than using the cursor to highlight...it's a bit tedious if you have to do the whole track!

To select the entire track I use Control+A. But I've changed my hot keys around and I'm not sure it this the original configuration. Anyway, go to Audacity > Preferences > Keyboard and scroll down until you find Select Track and on the right side it should show you the hot key. You can change these to suit how you work too.

Let me know if you have any questions/problems.
